Ross hated the Super Pit, he hated how lackadaisical the fans were on the side of the Pit opposite the bench (the alumni side I’m told), he hated being in a 1-bid conference, and he hated developing talent and watching them walk out the door for a bigger bag.  WVU solves all of those problems.

What's your connection to Rodge?

Jared and Co will happily go and threaten and kick the spirited fans out of 120/121 as well as threatening the Maniacs.

If you stand up during heated times of the game people yell at you to sit down. If you yell d-d-defense too loud, or yell at a ref, people below you complain and sometimes move.

The stands behind the courtside seats can't be bothered to do much of anything.  I want people to come to game... but damn, ESPN+ is cheaper than 2 season tickets if you want to watch in silence at your house.

Yuuupp... phuck around and go .500 ball in big12 ball for a few years and he'll be a washed up, burnt out retread somewhere.

With $15 million in his pockets and never ever worrying if a home game will get cancelled for a Fajita Faculty Luncheon…

I mean, sure. But the point still stands. He's going up there and about to start playing some of the best programs in the country. His blitzing screens and short corner trapping while his offense begrudgingly crawls to 65 points will not work. They will have dudes dropping nuts on foreheads over the top of those screen blitzes. There is some elite athleticism in that conference.

According to the articles, he interviewed for it last week, so it's possible he already had decided before LuncheonGate.

Yes, he interviewed and mentally left us last week.

The luncheon hurt the fans more than it hurt Ross.

Well, I’m gonna bet that he will get an offensive assistant, just as McCasland has done at Tech, to get that side of the ball going at a much better efficiency. They have the budget to do it. And so many portal opportunities being in the EST near ACC, A-10, AAC, B1G, and Big East schools. He’s gonna do well there.

I think he'll have to.

this is a weird take... so you're basically saying that even if he had stayed at UNT we would never be truly competitive as a basketball school

I am more mad that our university denied our student body, alumni, and community the opportunity to host a Big 12 opponent on national television with no other college basketball games on.  It is absolutely absurd and people need to be held accountable.  Coach Hodge was probably out the door anyways.  But our leadership screwed this one up royally and denied ourselves a perfect opportunity to highlight the best athletic run we've had in decades on a national stage.

This!

I don't blame Ross one bit for taking what everyone should agree is a better job.  As far as Luncheongate is concerned, the blame should squarely be placed at the feet of Jared Mosley and Harrison Keller.  Jared is Vice President and Athletic Director for gosh sakes! Is there no influence, no clout with that title and position? Does VP mean nothing in the hierarchy of things? Or did he simply just go along to get along?  If so, thanks for nothing, Jared.

But the person with the real power and influence is Keller. If the President of the university can't persuade or "influence" the Student Affairs group, which I hear controls the Super Pit schedule, to move, postpone or re-schedule a friggin, luncheon, then that tells me all I need to know about the so-called leadership at this school. It was a slap in the face to the athletic donors, and the casual fan that showed up for Arkansas St and witnessed a thrilling victory. Many of whom, I believe, would have packed the house again along with a throng of OK. St. fans, to watch us win on national television! We missed our opportunity, again, to attain something we seldom see in Denton. A student body, alumni and the Denton community come together for one huge night that could have been, but the small time thinking that permeates this university, reared its ugly head once more and snuffed the life out of many who just might have come out of the woodwork and support our school the way it so desperately wants and needs.

The whole thing is pathetic.

Yes, money does eventually become a factor and this was likely enough to produce the change.

However, people that are committed to their situation and enjoy what they are doing will often forgo a LOT of money to remain where they are happy.  Additionally, RH knows that if he simply maintains his status quo for a couple more years, he'll have plenty of opportunities over the next few years.

I've seen it numerous times and experienced it myself when I left a job that I really loved.  However, the management was totally screwing everyone over (while spewing BS about how much they respected everyone) and completely ignoring all of the feedback being provided.  Numerous employees were streaming out of the door and I eventually left for a 35% increase (obviously not 3x).

In the exit interview, I told HR that all management ever really needed to do was to give the employees a truly honest "thank you" and perform a very minimal attempt at showing appreciation.  Despite the fact that It would cost them almost nothing to do that, they were adamant that they knew better and simply showing honest appreciation was of no use.  This was despite the fact that I personally knew dozens of people that felt the same way.

A word of encouragement and appreciation goes a long way.  You're absolutely right.

I’m going to say some uncomfortable things about Ross related to the above. Reality is that Grant is the magic that built UNT (and now again with Tech). He’s the dynamic personality, culture builder, program change agent, more flexible X’s and O’s guy, donor “game player”, relationship builder, and program salesman.  He restored UNT to respectability after Tony Benford drove the program into a ditch and provided a ready made platform for Ross to succeed him and continue the success. And to Ross’ credit he’s done just that from an on the court results perspective. Very thankful for that. Off the floor, not so much.

That said - he’s not a magnetic, dynamic personality. Nor is he particularly interesting to watch as a coach (see on floor Mac or Johnny Jones back in the day for contrast). Community involvement and “selling” the program was severely lacking. Something we just can’t have from our HC’s.

On the lackadaisical fans and crowds in general - I get that cause it frustrates me, especially earlier in the season before the Maniacs start showing up in force (read: after football season & holiday break). One solution is to schedule better non conference games at home at which we did a horrendous job the past two seasons. Who controls that? What happened to that annual UTA game? Why aren’t Texas State, SFA, Sam Houston or others on the schedule. Why can’t we get home and homes with quality MWC or A10 teams? It’s also not the fans fault that SMU left the AAC and that we didn’t get to host Top 25 Memphis in the Super Pit this season. People bitching about the attendance this season don’t seem to factor in what having a couple 7,000+ crowds would do to the overall average, along with probably how the coaches perceive the fan support.

As someone else mentioned earlier in the thread, the talent developing & leaving, 1 bid conference beefs are the plights of mid major jobs. Don’t like it, don't take the job.  Reality is that UNT is light years ahead of where we were a decade ago as a program from a success on the floor and resources standpoint.

We’re going to be fine as a program. We have lots going for us. I do thank Ross for his time and dedication to Mean Green basketball. He and Mac have provided some great sports memories that I’ll forever be thankful for. I’m just MORE thankful to Grant who really laid the foundation and did it the hard way.

These aren’t the only two guys in NCAA basketball that can be successful here though.

Agreed.  Just wish the administration shared in our optimism.  If they did they would pony up more for salaries and NIL.  We shall see with this next hire how much dedication we truly have.  Football is a black hole, basketball is what truly has a chance to get us to the promised land.

Agree on the resources front. We need to take the extension package with significant increased resources that UNT had on the table for Ross (and Mac before that) and apply it to the new regime from jump. Steal an active, successful HC - several great options listed in the “Replacements” thread.

We’ve got to factor in better AAC media share, and increased student fees with UNT’s enrollment growth each season as we move along. Basketball can and should be a beneficiary of this.
