So. Bet we can double what they are paying. Go get him.

Oh I’m not saying he’s unattainable. I just think there’s better candidates available anyway that have proven HC records. Love what Mac & Hodge built, but they’re not the only good coaches UNT can get.

I want a guy with a history of postseason success as a head coach (at least one Sweet Sixteen), head coaching experience, roots in Texas and the Metroplex, familiarity with the realities of working at a mid-major, but also knowledge of what it takes to succeed at a major basketball school that doesn't have the automatic advantages of the true blue bloods.

If only someone like that were out there, looking for a head coaching opportunity...

Ummmm this is their 5th season in D1. He oversaw the D2 to D1 transition. Their final 5 seasons of D2 ball, he led UCSD to win totals of 24, 27, 21, 26, and 30. Sounds like a guy who can coach and attact talent at different levels of the game while staying competitive on a yearly basis which means constantly reloading on talent. They won 21 last year and 30 this year in their 4th and 5th seasons of D1 ball. This was their first season of being eligible for the NCAA D1 tournament and they made it. That also makes last year's 21 wins very impressive considering he was recruiting to a program that was not NCAA tourney eligible. They beat Utah State this year, something Ross couldn't do, and took Michigan to the wire ultimately losing by 3. Honestly, he'd be a great hire.

This is pretty impressive.

James Miller was on Grant's staff in year 1. And has gone on to be really up and coming assistant at NMSU, Miss. State and now Oklahoma State. (Associate Head Coach). Plus, he was a head coach in juco.....for four years. His teams went 86-23, and he sent 21 guys to Division 1 ball.

I like a guy with successful  juco head coach experience. They deal with turnover daily.

You have got to believe that the AD had to know that Ross leaving was a likelihood.  You would also believe that he would have started building a list of possible candidates.  I believe that his list would include some of these names. Just please pick a winner and let’s keep this train rolling, it’s been fun!

If he knew that, I wonder why he didn't give him a big contract with a buyout already..... 🤔

  1. John Groce: Leading Akron in the Mid-American Conference, Groce has significant experience and success at the mid-major level.

  2. Casey Alexander: The head coach at Belmont, Alexander has consistently led his team to strong performances in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Alexander is coaching at his Alma Mater.   It would be extremely tough to rip him away.    Groce is also from up in the rust belt, so it would be tough to get him away from Akron.

IMO,   ERIC OLEN should be a front runner... ESPECIALLY if you're a fan of trying to keep a defensive mentality.

EDIT:   This year, Coach Olen's Tritons beat James Madison, Toledo, & UTAH STATE on their way to cruising to a championship.
Then, they gave Michigan (who averaged over 78ppg) everything they could possibly handle in the 1st round of the tourney, losing 65-68.

This is key.  Find a coach that embraces the portal challenge and is a great recruiter.

That's like believing he knew there was a confliction with the NIT and luncheon and did something ahead of time to plan for fixing it...

Just guessing but perhaps our new president didn't want to rock the boat with staff. At the end of the day it was his call.
