And are they capable of recruiting our own roster? Lorient and some young guys have potential. Just have to wonder how many will stay.

The answer will be NONE. That is ok though. Just the new world we are all in.

Yup. Saw this earlier and kind of reminded that most teams are dealing with the portal. Many are still finding ways to gel quickly and win.

I am still leaning towards promoting from within. Stick with what works until it doesn't.

Whoever is coach, we must maintain the defensive mentality that has worked so well for us. We don't need superstar athletes. We need hard working team players that can shoot at a good percentage.

The defensive mentality is the part that’s leaving though.   The assistants we have now have all been under Coach Hodge for 2 years.  What if none of them subscribe to that defensive style if they were HC?  I bet Coach Hodge takes 1 or 2 (maybe 3) key assistants with him.

And with almost all of our players leaving, we’re not really retaining a bunch of guys who are completely bought into that defensive mentality, necessitating the continuity.

The system has to stay. It's what has created the greatest run in UNT athletics. If someone is ready, promote.

As I stated in the other thread. The ones that know the system are leaving. We are starting over and putting our trust in Jared. Only God can help us now.

I tell you what, if Jase Herl said he has fully subscribed to Hodge’s philosophy, after only serving under him for less than 2 years, I’d interview him.  He probably has his own philosophy though.

I don’t believe anyone else currently on staff has the wall skins or is ready to take over this opportunity.

EDIT:    Upon further review….  If you’re really concerned with keeping up a tough defensive mentality, you might want to look at THIS LIST… particularly at #7 on that list.  He has to be target #1.

I'm not so sure about that. Though they were pretty good this year and a fun watch, he hasn't been all that consistent. I live out here and I went and watched them times this year. To put it plain and simple, they had much better players vs their peer competition. I'm not sure he's the answer.

Drew Valentine - Loyola (Chicago) - ~ $550,000 current annual comp. 80-50 HC record. 33 years old. Already an NCAA Tournament and NIT Tournament appearance.

Watch his team later tonight in some more hot NIT action. Maybe we just bring him back from Indianapolis on our charter when we beat them in the final???

Doubling down on UNT taking a hard look at this guy. Loyola continues to impress.

Oh!

So you’re telling me he can attract top talent as well?

Where do I sign up?

Yeaaahhh... destination city + top-tier education. He had tools to get them there. Also, this was by and large his most successful season, ever. No other year is remotely close. Consistency issues.

Has it been reported who all is leaving with Hodge?

Thought SFA already hired TT’s #2.

So. Bet we can double what they are paying. Go get him.

As much as our success is this defensive system, it is also the mentality Mac installed. Kids loved playing together on these teams. Just look at Floyd’s reaction to losing in the conference semi’s. They created a family atmosphere and got the best out of the players. We need a coach that understands this and keeps that in place.
