The West Virginia Mountaineers are on the search for their fourth head basketball coach in as many seasons. Now, according to a report by Jon Rothstein, North Texas Mean Green head coach Ross Hodge has emerged as a serious candidate for the job.

At this point, nothing is final in the coaching search. However, West Virginia athletic director Wren Baker does have a familiarity with Ross Hodge. The pair worked together at North Texas, where Baker worked before getting to Morgantown.

This season, in particular, has been a good one for North Texas. The Mean Green are currently in the NIT semifinals, having already won three games in that tournament. This season, Hodge has led North Texas to a 27-8 record and a 14-4 record in AAC play, which was second place in the regular season standings. That includes a win over Big 12 school Oklahoma State.

Only a head coach for 2 seasons at a D1? WVU can do better.

He also took a young team expected to be 7th in conference to the NIT semis (so far) and set a pretty high bar for defensive ranking. Same as with Grant, imagine what he can do with higher caliber players and funding? Yes he's absolutely going to get some quality interviews.  I just wish our admin had the ambition to step up and match

If I am WVU, Hodge has not won a Q1 game, has not beat a team ranked higher in the NET, won a lot of games in a conference that is very weak outside its top 4, played a little sloppy at times on offense, and has also been lucky at times.  He is an above average mid major coach, but I think he still has some growing to do at the mid major level.

VWU was a bubble team this year, had 6 Q1 wins, 4 Q4 wins and no Q3 or Q4 losses.  The high majors are all about recruiting 4 and 5 start players out of high school.  Any coach they hire will need to have extensive recruiting at the high school level.
