What a fvcking joke!  This is why we can not get respect and still have the small time image.

Heads need to roll for this bullshit.

Hell, people are gonna get EXTENSIONS and BONUSES for this...

This is the norm here. Ask anyone who was around in the Hayden Fry era, which is basically what these last 5+ years have been under GMac and Hodge. We don't care. The leadership, the student body, the faculty, and the community OVERWHELMINGLY don't give a rip about the school's athletics--or really anything else, if we are honest, although they pay lip service very well. Proof is in the pudding and has been for going on 60+ years or more.

The Super Pit never looked better....hahaha.  Actually, most of the event (at least some that I watched), was zoomed in on the podium where they did the door prize drawings and awards.  There was one zoomed out angle at the end that I pasted below.

All kidding aside, it is important to celebrate success and recognize employee contributions.  Too many organizations (business or otherwise) don't do a very good job of this.  It's unfortunate that the event created a conflict, but it seems there could have been a better resolution. Anyway, congratulations to all the award recipients.  You make UNT a better place for the students.  Go Mean Green!

Are they really going to do the cheerleading event on a cement floor?

Of course not, that will be quickly setup as soon as this luncheon ends, even if it requires overtime pay. I mean, its a cheer competition. We gotta show out really solidly for perspective students. That's how the faculty and administration can keep being employed.

Oh, one final thing.  One of the last door prizes was 4 football tickets (didn't say if they were season tickets or just a single game).  Didn't really create much stir in the attendees and I don't think the recipient came up to claim the prize or wasn't in attendance.  However, the next door prize did create a lot of buzz in the Super Pit.  Wait for it....a 2026 parking pass!

Did they ever buy tickets or attend games? Likely not, and this is just the latest excuse they make.

Actually they gave up their club level already because they were disappointed year after year. Waste of time and money. So likely yes…

Novel concept and certainly worth considering.  Frisco would appreciate us much more than Denton will.

That's not even counting Prosper, Celina, McKinney, Allen, Little Elm, Plano, Carrollton, etc..

There's no way there was any more than 500 people there.   Probably more like 200-300.    This could have EASILY been moved to the Gateway Center:

They know whose bread they need to butter here. Faculty at UNT means way more than fans of a (gasp) sports team.

I don't think this was for faculty. This was an event for non-faculty employees and staff of the University.  At least I'm fairly sure it did not include faculty.

Those tables look sardined. Would have had more space at the IPF.

Here was one of the awards presented (around 00:54:00) :

Rising Star Award (my quick transcription of the presentation)

"Recognizes staff members which within their first two years of the position have demonstrated a passion for their work, the institution, and the UNT tradition, along with showing promise in their work and are making a large impact on the UNT community."

The two winners were:
   Nicholas Edelman (Housing)
   Ethan Gillis (International Affairs)

Nothing against these two and I don't know how much impact "housing" and "international affairs" has on the UNT community but I have a feeling there's a guy that did a pretty good job during his first (only) 2 years in his position to impact the UNT community.

You know, now that you say that, I think the University may have actually cheaped-out on the event by holding it in the Super Pit.  Maybe that was the motivation.  The whole setup looked low-rent.  Rinky-dink little stage and podium with a small free-standing screen behind the podium.  The flow was bad with barely any room for the recipients to get a photo with the president and then squeeze behind the speaker at the podium to exit the stage.  On top of that, people were walking back and forth in front of the stage the whole time (maybe carrying plates of food back to their table?).

In other words completely par for the course in UNT's ability to execute anything.

From the looks of that picture, they should have hosted it at the Pohl Rec Center.

As an attendee, wouldn't you prefer the latter alternative anyway instead of a cavernous coliseum?

It would have been a minimal amount of work to get this moved or delayed. Think of how many places could have hosted this luncheon. Don't we have a fairly new Recreation building or indoor football training field? No one cared enough to try, and in most other places, missed opportunities like this would cost some people their jobs.

We never seem to have a clear mandate or accountability for our sports program or maybe the whole university. But without a doubt, Athletics is the University's Red-Headed Stepchild.

Solution. Build a state of the art 6,000 seat arena prioritized for athletics on the Frisco campus and get sports city USA, Frisco involved. Frisco is ripe to turn Mean Green. That city will embrace family entertainment and fun things to do across the year.

At the watch party at Wings Over Frisco I swear some of the tables were made up of UNT Frisco students. They were scooping up the pennants and cooling towels couldn’t believe they were free. It was so cool to see students excited to rep their University. All you need to do is replace 4,500 Denton diehards with  5,000 Frisco family residents, students, and the same traveling alumni. Who do we lose the Denton campus students. It would suck on that front but you could get 5,000 regulars in Frisco in a 6,000 seat arena with some crafty marketing to a hungry city environment. Make UNT basketball Frisco’s team.

Radical yea. Deserved yea. Prioritized absolutely.

I like your way of thinking. It's the kind of forward thinking that is sorely lacking in all areas at UNT, especially athletics and marketing.

On another note, I am trying to justify donating $ to our NIL, but with the leadership we have in place now, I think I'll invest my money where I can get a return on my investment. But one innovative thing I've seen (I think it was at UTSA) when buying at the refreshment stand, they would ask if you wanted to round up or even donate $1 to their NIL fund. Do you think our athletic department would come up with something like that? If so, I've neither seen it nor heard it. Just my 2 cents.

I count only 5 or 6 in the photo I can see.

Again, no loyalty or support to the school for most.  It's just a job to them.

They would leave for TWU or Denton ISD if the pay was a few $ more.

And with the Pit still standing, both our basketball teams could still play a few mid-week home games in Denton each season for the local students and fans.

Planting our basketball flag in Frisco is a no-brainer. Let's do it.
