UNT Advances To NIT Quarters On Floyd Winner

DENTON – Jasper Floyd made a turnaround jumper with one second remaining to lift the UNT men’s basketball team to a 65-63 home win over Arkansas State Sunday night in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament.

 

With the win, the Mean Green advance to the NIT quarterfinals where they will face Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on Tuesday at 8 p.m. CT. The win is also North Texas’ 26th of the year, which is the second most in program history. It was their 17th home win of the year. The previous single season school record was 15.

 

“That’s a really good basketball team and heis a tremendous coach,” said UNT head coach Ross Hodge. “They had our full respect, and our guys played really hard. We were able to make one more play there at the end. That’s usually what it comes down to this time of year.”

 

Arkansas State (25-11) tied for first place in the Sun Belt standings this year and reached the championship round of the SBC Tournament. They defeated American Athletic Conference opponents Memphis and UAB on the road during the non-conference.

 

Floyd’s game winner gave him a game-high 18 points, tied with teammate Latrell Jossell who also finished with 18 points in the two-point win. Floyd has scored now 37 points over the Mean Green’s two games in this year’s NIT.

 

Tuesday’s matchup at Oklahoma State is a rematch from the Mean Green’s 2023 NIT championship run where they beat the Cowboys in Stillwater in the quarterfinals of the NIT, 65-59. Tuesday’s game will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield and on ESPN2.

Hope someone reminds Newell that he is 6'9" and a specimen.  Play like it.  He needs to get pissed and go up strong when under the basket.

      What kind of scheduling conflict?!

      No, my point being University-wide apathy. That’s worse than just a scheduling Uh-Oh by the AD. University-wide Apathy is what caused this. If you, or me, or FlyOnTheWall or Harry, SUMG or…fill in the blank_____________ bleeding-green-alum were in on decision making, we’d had made sure last April, last May, June, July, August, whenever the schedules are planned for the upcoming season, we would have made damn sure tournament time in March for the SP is kept open, or flexible. It would keep us up at night after we were off the clock, making us sick, stewing about it till we got it right. And if we were told no, we would go up the chain till we found a YES. Instead, the university , not simply the AD,…told the entire college basketball watching world that The University Of North Texas does not care about athletics, and told our teams and our donating alumni to go pound sand.       Yes,….all effing day. Now, they know how tuff of a team we really have, winning in Stoolwater where it was 5 on 7. We beat Ok State, the refs,….and the North Texas Administration. Rick

      So, how was the luncheon ?

      Solution. Build a state of the art 6,000 seat arena prioritized for athletics on the Frisco campus and get sports city USA, Frisco involved. Frisco is ripe to turn Mean Green. That city will embrace family entertainment and fun things to do across the year. At the watch party at Wings Over Frisco I swear some of the tables were made up of UNT Frisco students. They were scooping up the pennants and cooling towels couldn’t believe they were free. It was so cool to see students excited to rep their University. All you need to do is replace 4,500 Denton diehards with 5,000 Frisco family residents, students, and the same traveling alumni. Who do we lose the Denton campus students. It would suck on that front but you could get 5,000 regulars in Frisco in a 6,000 seat arena with some crafty marketing to a hungry city environment. Make UNT basketball Frisco’s team. Radical yea. Deserved yea. Prioritized absolutely. GMG
