This AD has no sense of marketing or connection with the students, alums, or fanbase, it's totally on self-serve, auto-pilot.

These events are probably scheduled years in advance which takes priority over a crystal ball projection into the future as to post season play for our basketball teams. In addition the DMN quoted our AD as stating that the Super Pitt floor had to be removed for the scheduled event. I am assuming that there wasn't enough turn around time to host both events on Tuesday. The announced attendance last night was 2,666. I was at the game and it looked like more but I am an old man with failing eyesight. With attendance such as this you are going to have a hard time convincing any administration to bump a scheduled event for athletics.

My guess, very little other than interface with the BOR  and various politicians to represent NT at the highest  level.  He seems to be practically invisible to alumni, students and the public at large..

Oh, it was definitely more. I have no idea how they get these numbers, but that place was pretty full on the lower bowl.

The game is Tuesday, the lunch is on Wednesday.   

A Power Conference school would make it work, as Athletics is important to them.

How do we change North Texas Athletics to a much higher priority?  What's the chain of command?  Board of Regents > UNT President> Athletic Department?

Oklahoma State couldn't make it work due to a scheduling conflict/staffing issue in the 2023 NIT when they had to travel to Youngstown State, despite being the top overall seed. 

Historically speaking, I realize that NT's track record of prioritizing athletics is . . . not the best.  But, also--sometimes shit just happens.

That was to host the Big 12 wrestling tournament, not a faculty appreciation luncheon. Big difference.

I emailed President Keller and this was the reply I got from one of his assistants.

While we would have loved to host the quarterfinal round in the Super Pit, pre-existing commitments – including a campus-wide event and a long-term external contract – are taking the men’s team on the road to face Oklahoma State tomorrow at 8 p.m. While it is not uncommon for higher seeds to travel during the first three rounds in the NIT to accommodate facility availability, we hope our passionate Mean Green fans cheer on the team as they fight to advance to the semifinal round in Indiana.

There's at least a half dozen ways this could have been resolved but ONLY if they wanted to resolve it.

Moving it would have required a minimal amount of effort but mostly would have resulted in some backlash from a smll number of vocal professors, admin, etc. that absolutely hate athletics.  Our weak leadership would rather screw over the fans than face hearing from that small group.

I hate to make a political/cultural comparison but it's kinda' like irritating conservatives vs liberals or Christians vs Muslims.  The fans are like the former groups, i.e. we'll complain a bit but it won't make much of a stink, whereas those attending the event are more like the latter groups and will be a much bigger thorn in the side of the administration if they are forced to make a change due to silly old athletics.

Not only did the administration take the path of least resistance, they also likely support it.

Not exactly--yes, there was a wrestling tournament, but it was the staffing issue that resulted from from it that was the direct factor.  

Look, I'm frustrated too, but we can't pretend that this doesn't happen to a couple athletic departments every single NIT season.

That press release breaks a golden rule. It makes a damn excuse. 

I have long believed that there is a special kind of malaise/apathy over the North Texas area when it comes to sports. I used to tell people in Denton back in the 1980's that Notre Dame football couldn't make it any better in Denton than NTSU.

So I've heard both about the luncheon and a dance team competition as reasons for this. This from the D-RC:

UNT was in position to host Oklahoma State in a quarterfinal game but will head to Stillwater instead on Tuesday. The Super Pit — UNT’s home venue — is booked for a staff appreciation lunch on Wednesday that will require the court to be removed from the venue. A two-day dance/drill will follow beginning Friday.

 

(So the dance/drill team thing doesn't even start until Friday. It's funny....the AAC (American Airlines Center) will have several times in a year....where they have a hockey game at 1 pm......and then turn around the arena for a basketball game that night. (or vice versa). Here....we can't even figure out a way to do a basketball game at night.....then turn around and have it set up for a luncheon the next day. I realize it would have required some guys doing overtime. Maybe even bring in extra help from the Physical Plant. But whatever was paid out.....would have been easily covered by concession sales). Unbelievable. )

All these excuses are laziness.

Bulls to Blackhawks floor change (including seating changes) takes 1 hour, 45 minutes.  

Removing flooring to concrete surface (for a luncheon) would be even faster.

It would be interesting to know when (or if) anyone realized there was a potential conflict brewing and if there was any…any…attempt by anyone to see if there was a way to accommodate both the luncheon and the basketball game that would not result in the team traveling to Stillwater.
