I just can't see a path for people to be doing this annually for every sport the next decade... and the AAC wants us to spend 10M? Jared better hire DOGE to come clean up.

this chart is bs.  i know what ive done for basketball...not all is or can be reported

The Crown, as a strategy, wanted "Brands" for their tournament. They said that would get more TV views and more traveling fan bases to the games. Notice the logos-only on the bracket, no school names.

Also notice the PAC2 both present in this tournament.   With them adding Gonzaga, Boise, St. Marys, etc this will be a nice basketball conference with National media.  We should pursue interest....

Yes they wanted brands, however their website specifically states the Big East, Big 12, and Big 10 each get 2 bids. Then an at-large process fills in the rest but as you can see from the bracket, 11 of 16 are from those 3 conferences. Three are then from the new PAC, making me think there may be a PAC/Fox deal set to be announced.

I agree, our leadership should make a push to join that conference out west...

Wow.

We've really come a long way.   We're actually bemoaning playing in NIT 4 years in a row now??

That’s fair…but back in the day there were only two tournaments to get into….now we’re up to what 3? 4?….the networks want content and they’re slowly turning college basketball into bowl season.

On the broadcast, they panned over to him several times while on the bench. Sock and shoe were off and he was receiving treatment. Temple game was not meaningless. Losing to UAB once is fine. Twice can't happen when you're trying to make the NCAA tournament. Prior to the UTSA loss, our NET was 45. For comparison, Memphis is currently at 49. Only two schools in the 40s who didn't make the tournament are 44 Boise State and 46 SMU. We had a chance and blew it. None of those losses were meaningless.

North Texas was around 38ish a few years ago and didnt make the tournament....I think...so being 45 before a loss doesn't matter.

I'm happy to be in the NIT instead of the Crown.  Seems like a gimmick to me.  Too much like the one during the summer where the winner takes all.  It will be as irrelevant as the UFL and this new WNBA 3 on 3 thing.

In trying to invent more content and opportunity these media/corporate ideas have degraded history to an extent.  The NIT used to be special, and the Finals in a special place, MSG.  Now it's watered down because of all the competing tournaments.  Participation trophies for everyone!

Too close to call given Tulane got invited.  In other words, it makes me less envious of Crown given Tulane is in . If UAB was going to the Crown instead of NIT, then I would have been a little jealous.

Those teams have to have someone to beat in the first round.  Good luck to them, Tulane looked pretty good against Memphis.

Teams all over the NET get in every year. Your chances are better in the 40s than 60s where we are now. Had we not dropped those games, we'd likely have finished in the 30s with a better resume than we had at 38 a few years back when we were in CUSA.

Hell will freeze over before the NCAA gives us an at-large bid.  Too many televisions in the SEC.

Remember, the tournament is there to make money, not have the best teams.

And with a NET of 39. Key is they played a strong OOC with very good wins so the Quad 3 and 4 losses in conference didn't matter.

Absolutely hate that there is another post tournament….. however….. This is the only way I am ok with the NIL being paid out. Winning games and then for players only based on season and post season individual awards. This should be how all college sports are done when it comes to the NIL.

So base it on Performance?  It could then be Name, Image, Performance, Likeness or NIPL.  What could go wrong?

And what were those expectations on 11/1/24?    ...after coming off of a 19-15 year and losing your top 6 players from that team to transfer/graduation?    HONESTLY, what were your expectations?

It is going to be like this EVERY SEASON. So if you don’t accept that, then your expectations will be low I guess.

If you understand that fact, then you know that everyone at our level will be facing this scenario; therefore, we should expect that that the coaching staff will rebuild and put a championship team on the floor. If they can’t deal with that annual turnover then they are not right for the job. It’s the new reality. Otherwise, every year we will be happy just to compete and accept second best.

So is our hope to be where we were 2 years ago or to make progress on a yearly basis? We promoted Hodge to keep the same upward momentum, not to stay stagnant. Had 2023 not happened, my expectations would be different. Were we anytime around the Benford era, my expectations would be different. We've been fairly successful for 8 seasons now. It's time for a breakthrough.

Has our NIL donations increased to put us at the level of the teams we're competing with for championships? I doubt it, so we have to convince top players to come play for UNT for less money, fan support and exposure. I think Hodge has done an incredible job keeping us as a top major.

I refuse to believe we're going to lose our top 6 guys year over year, EVERY SEASON from now on.
UAB lost 3 of their top 8 from 2023-24.  Only one of their guys transferred to a different school, 2 graduated.    We lost 6.  Only 1 of those guys was out of eligibility.

But, if we do, I feel confident now that Coach Hodge can ID ballers who work in his system, and get them to gel quickly enough to contend for a conference title.   Prior to this season, how could anyone have that kind of confidence?

And, "second best" to a ranked Memphis team...  yeah, I guess I'll just have to settle for that.
It's not like we lost a .500 coach, and replaced him with a sub .500 coach that is almost a mirror image of the previous guy in coaching style.

Now, if NT had finished the season where they were projected to: 7th (Temple 17-15 overall, 9-9 in conference), then yeah, I might be concerned with where we are and if Hodge can navigate the portal & get us any higher.

NIL isn't everything. Example:

"But Calhoun’s loyalty comes with higher expectations. With USU making the move to the Pac-12 in 2026, he wants his salary in the top four of the league. He expects his assistant coaching pool to mirror that.

He also wants his NIL budget to be in the top four. Right now, it sits at sixth in the Mountain West. USU has roughly $700,000 to $800,000 a year, he said. But that is significantly behind San Diego State, which can run from $2 to $4 million, he said."
