Not to pick nits here but out scoring the opposition is literally the only way to win a game. When they score more it is called a loss. (I understand what you meant but your statement is a prime example of why clear language is important - not trying to pick on you)
Can’t decide who to root for in this one. I have a grad degree from Mason but on the other hand, best bj of my life was from a girl from Bradley and that made me a lifelong fan.
DENTON – The UNT men’s basketball team advanced to the second round of the National Invitation Tournament Wednesday with a 75-64 win over Furman at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green (25-8) were led by senior point guard Jasper Floyd who scored a game high 19 points, had a game high seven assists and grabbed a game high six rebounds.
With the home win, North Texas has now won 25 games this season, which is tied for the second-most in a single season in program history. They have won a single season program 16 games at the Super Pit this year and second-year head coach Ross Hodge has now won 44 total games, the most in a Mean Green head coach’s first two seasons.
Furthermore, UNT has won at least one national postseason tournament game five years in a row.
“I didn’t want tonight to be the last time I played with these guys,” Floyd said after the win. “Furman is a really good and talented team. We were locked in defensively and that really helped our offense.”
Furman (25-10) entered Wednesday as one of the nation’s most prolific offenses. The Paladins are just two years removed from upsetting Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
On Wednesday, the Mean Green held Furman’s leading scorer Pjay Smith to just seven points, three of which he scored on a last second heave at the end of the game. Smith had scored 24 or more in four straight games entering Wednesday and had scored in double figures in 12 straight games as well.
Atin Wright was not too far behind Floyd as the fellow senior scored 18 points, 15 of which came in the second half. Wright knocked down four 3-pointers in Wednesday’s win to give him 92 on the year. It is the fourth most in a single season in program history.
North Texas, the 2023 NIT champions, will host Arkansas State in the second-round game on Sunday at 6 p.m. CT at the Super Pit. The Red Wolves, who used to be conference mates with UNT in the Sun Belt, beat Saint Louis 103-78 in their first-round game.
