Due to weather, this week's tournament in Arlington may be the closest we get to a home opener before our game against Oklahoma State on March 5th.

After every other UTA program decided they no longer wanted to play us, kudos to softball for being the outlier. However, they decided for this year's Arlington game to be a Thursday 1pm game to try to avoid the heckling of @untcampbell, @FirefightnRick, myself and a few others. Joke's on them - I've got the afternoon off this Thursday and look forward to my first softball game of the year.

Schedule (updated 2/18)

Tournament Participants

School Wins Losses Notes
North Texas 8 2 You already know.
Incarnate Word 4 6 UIW and UTA already played in Incarnate Word's tournament where they split two meetings.
Three of UIW's four wins were in that tournament. This past weekend, their only win was a 16-10 thriller
over Pitt in Houston's tournament.
UT Arlington 4 7 UTA started 4-0 in UIW's tournament. After losing to UIW, UTA got swept in LSU's tournament. They got
outscored 37-4 in five games to #7 LSU, #18 VA Tech, and #21 Northwestern.
Northwestern State 1 8 Their sole win was a 4-3 extra-inning victory over Memphis this past weekend. Memphis, under a new head
coach, loaded their opening tournament with cupcakes to start 5-0.
Yale 0 0 This tournament will be the open of their 2025 campaign. They were 20-26 in 2024.

Even though the beginning of this year's schedule is not as tough as last year's, you can't deny that something has changed for the better with our hitting in 2025. Last year we weren't even beating up on the bad teams like UTSA or Memphis. And honestly the nerd in me likes being the best team in a tournament to allow some of our gals to beef up their numbers.

2024
Team batting average - .261
Runs per game - 4.196
HR per game - 0.786
Players with a HR - 12
Starters batting .300 or better - 2

2025 (thru 14 games)
Team batting average - .314
Runs per game - 6.929
HR per game - 0.857
Players with a HR - 7
Starters batting .300 or better - 6

Returners making a [greater] impact

  • Tatum Sparks - .244, 3 HR, 15 RBI in 51 games (2024); .431, 2 HR, 11 RBI in 14 games (2025)
  • Elizabeth Moffitt - .200, 2 HR, 8 RBI in 30 games (2024); .341, 2 HR, 15 RBI in 14 games (2025)
  • Rylee Nicholson - .203, 2 HR, 7 RBI in 43 games (2024); .333, 0 HR, 7 RBI in 14 games (2025)
  • Madison Conley - .194, 2 HR, 5 RBI in 24 games (2024); .278, 1 HR, 10 RBI in 14 games (2025)

And let's not forget veteran Cierra Simon, who continues her success, currently batting .422 and already matching her two home runs from last year, when she batted a team-best .331.

See y'all at The Lace Wednesday afternoon!

Our stolen base numbers are really good, too. I think Rylie Nicholson is 10-11 in SBs.

When I saw Maddie Conley last year....I figured with her size....she was heir apparent at 1b to Gamble. And maybe that is still the plan....when Kailyn Bearpaw leaves. But they had her in the outfield....y'day. She doesn't have the atypical OF body.......but she runs well for her size.

I think our season hinges on Skylar.....if she can become a true ace.....I think we'll go far. Love this team....so fun to watch.

For anyone still upset about losing to Cal Baptist, Northwestern State, who we run ruled in Arlington, shut out #20 Mississippi State today in Starkville. They were 2-17 entering the game.

Matt....are you familiar at all....with NT's baseball history?

In the 1980s....we had a program......really underfunded. I think there were 3 scholarships spread out over the whole team. Our coach (Phil Price) worked for $3,000....because making more than that.....would have messed up his Social Security.

And yet our guys..............somehow beat the #1 team in the nation...Oklahoma State. A team that had several future major leaguers on it.

Others may have more information about that game.....

I just remember Pete Incaviglia hit a bomb out of Mack Park field that landed in the adjacent apartment parking lot, roughly 500 feet from home plate.

When you divide what I believe was TWO scholarships amongst a baseball team, it is a) a club sport for all intents and purposes; and b) enough to give each player McDonalds coupons, free Taco Casa tacos (then priced at 29 cents) and a Big Chief notepad.

And yet, driving out to Mack Field and watching them was a delight. And every once in a while, magic happened.

Title IX shut it down, along with a great Mens Soccer team, for the lady sports.

As it turns out, I get immense joy, more than from baseball or mens soccer, watching our softball team.

Just that we had five bad years in the '80s. Honestly, I don't follow much college baseball at all. But I agree with Scott, I have a blast rooting on our softball ladies.

What really killed me about that Miss State game is the walks and errors. We walked 9 batters and I remember quite a few errors. We also left a bunch of runners on base ourselves. Hits were 9-7 in favor of Miss State. I think we're closer to them than that final score would have you believe.
