Mean Green Score Season High in 97-57 Win Over Memphis

Desiree Wooten scored a career-high 25 points in the win

DENTON, Texas — An offensive explosion in the second half led the UNT women’s basketball team to a 97-57 rout of Memphis inside The Super Pit on Wednesday night.

The win marked the 13th victory at home this season, which sets a program record for most home wins in a single season.

The Mean Green trailed at half, 36-34, but scored 63 points in the second half to run away with the win. UNT’s second half total matched the second-most points scored in a half for the program since the 1992-93 season.

“Our young women responded at halftime being down to a good Memphis team,” head coach Jason Burton said. “We played lights out in the second half with our attention to detail on defense and where we took our shots in one of the most efficient quarters of the season. To score 32 points and do it on 70% shooting is incredible.”

The second half began with a 19-2 run for North Texas as it took its first lead of the game on the second possession of the half. From there, the Mean Green poured it on, shooting 70% from the field to outscore the Tigers, 32-6, in the quarter.

The fourth quarter was much of the same as UNT had 31 points en route to scoring the most points against a conference opponent since 2016 when North Texas also tallied 97 against in a triple overtime game versus Rice.

The 40-point margin of victory is the largest win over a conference foe in the Burton era.

Desiree Wooten led North Texas with 25 points, marking a career high for the sophomore guard. Tommisha Lampkin added 22 points on a night that she surpassed 1,400 career points to move past Amber Jackson into sixth place on the program’s all-time scoring list. Lampkin also grabbed 15 rebounds for her 12th double double of the season.

In total, the Mean Green had 10 different players score in the game. Behind Lampkin and a 12-point performance from Shadasia Brackens, UNT outscored Memphis 66-16 in the paint.

With the win, UNT improved to 18-7 on the year and 10-3 in AAC play. The Mean Green will travel to take on Tulsa Saturday with tip-off set for 2 p.m. CT from the Reynolds Center.
