Softball: Alex Wilcox Memorial, Starkville, MS (2/14-16/2025)

After winning four of five games this weekend to claim the Troy Trojan Classic, the ladies will be in Starkville, MS for some tougher matchups. UNT is getting the respect it deserves. This will be the second straight tournament the host (24th ranked Mississippi State) only wants to play once. But looking at the teams in this field, 3-2 would be a good weekend IMO.

UNT falls behind to Southern Illinois, 1-0, before Cierra Simon hits a loaded bases clearing double to take the lead. Then Simon scores when Bearclaw reaches on an error. 4-1 Mean Green after three innings.

Skylar (2-0) goes the distance as UNT finally holds onto a 7th inning lead. Southern Illinois was able to add a pair in the fifth to make it a close, 4-3 victory for the Mean Green, who improve to 5-1.

saw the score .. wish we were able to see some highlights of the game.   Will check out the 2:00 pm game later.  4-1 looks good, but this weekend will really show us a lot.  solid competition.

More small ball has us down 6-5 going into the bottom of the 4th (MS ST side of the inning). We've scored on a single, throwing error, single, and 2-run single from Sparks.

Mississippi State responds with four runs, highlighted by a 3-run bomb, in the bottom half. 10-5 Bulldogs going to the fifth.

Gave up 4 in the fourth.....down 10-5.

Walks are killing us today.....just like they did against Tenn. State

We need to find a pitching coach that can develop our pitchers.  Childers has all the talent in the world, but throws like a young Nuke Laloosh.  Walks were issues last year as well.  

Now 11-5.  Walk the leadoff hitter, advances to second on a passed ball and scores on a single.  The run is, by rule, unearned which is stupid.  The pitcher walked the batter and threw a pitch that caused the passed ball.  Seems pretty earned to me.

MSU now has runners on 1st and 2nd with one out due to another walk.

Very much encouraged by the hitting in innings 2 and 3 though.

I am encouraged by the five runs... looking at last year's schedule. We played 10 games against Power 5 conference teams. We went 1-9 and got outscored 82-18, getting shutout four times.

Just one game today.....SIU at 9 am.

 

Two games on Sunday....Bradley and Ga. Tech (9 and 11:30)

BTW....the way the weather is looking....I kind of doubt the home opener against TTech.....happens on Tuesday night.

Mackenzie Childers (starter)....didn't even record an out.....before getting yanked. 3 BBs...and earned run did her in. 

Kayleigh Smith on the mound.....in relief.

SIU ties it in the second. We're now batting in the bottom half.

Ever since Jamie Allred, left us as our pitching coach....and took a job at Virginia.....our pitching has been very suspect.

The new pitching coach, came in from Grand Canyon U.....and has good credentials. But so far.....the results are pretty sketchy.

Whatever happened to Childers at the end of last season sadly hasn't been fixed over the off-season. Kayleigh Smith looks like she will become the #3 option.
