I agree. I also thought, at least at the high school level, that it was somewhat of a carrot to hold in front of the players. Kind of a “work hard for these two weeks and we’ll finish it off with a big scrimmage” type of mindset to keep the team engaged.
There is no purpose for a Spring Game and there never was. The coaches will never show anything they have been working on. Players can only get hurt for no gain. The fans can't tell if the defense is good or the offense is bad. In HS, it is just for the parents to see their babies. In college, it has no purpose.
