Thanks.  The link wasn't working for me.

SEC doesn't deserve that many bids, nor does the Big 10 and Big XII

That's what happens when a league dominates the others though.  The SEC absolutely killed in the OOC slate this year, so amazingly 13 isn't out of the question.

Well those bottom 3-4 teams in the SEC can now go enjoy the College Basketball Crown in Vegas. *emphatically crosses arms*

They’re not that dominant anymore. Since Jan 4, they’re only 54-54. Pedestrian conference.

Wait till you see the NIT invites.  They are changing the format this year to get more "Brands" into their tourney (for viewership).   They are concerned another post season Tourney starting this year will cherry-pick the best "Brands" remaining.

It's all about "Brands" these days and media value....not actually "court-playing ability" like it should be.

I suppose you’re correct that’s what it should be about, but TV and venues want eyeballs. Those brands bring them consistently. I understand if someone looks at Rice or Tulane and says that they don’t have many alumni or students, so I’d rather have Iowa or Georgia. What has to be confusing to those people is to see some place with a huge enrollment and a giant alumni base and see that about 2% of that group cares about their teams.

Very much confusing.  There has to be a consulting group (?) that would investigate why our students, alums, and locals are not as passionate towards the school and it's athletic teams as we feel they should be.  What is missing; what can be done to push them into becoming passionate fans?

It’s the type of student. Education and liberal arts. I don’t think it’s a mystery.

now, changing that? No easy answer.

I mean, seriously, we have like 40+ years of seeing basically the same thing here.  What’s been the constant? A university that actively strangled athletics funding for decades. A university that graduates teachers, musicians, and artists, as well as commuters.  That’s not exactly an easy group to connect with, much less squeeze real money from. Face it, athletics at big time places are funded by engineering, business, science, and medicine.

It’s been 40 years and we cant get 30,000 people to a football game on Saturday…or 5-10 thousand for a basketball game?

I think the latest push of the maniacs is a good initiative that will pay off down the line.

I think it can be overcome, but it will take a consistent, winning brand, plus a coordinated effort between the AD and the community.  Artists and creators love the fill up their time with their craft.  You have to give them a winning product and a fun experience to pull them away from their craft.  They aren't doing the 9-5 obligations and then twiddling their thumbs the other 2-4 hours of the day.  They aren't getting bored on the weekend looking for things to do.

Maybe it's already been attempted, but how about committee made up of (pro-Mean Green) DFW alumni and current UNT students that regularly meet in the AD walls, with AD folk, that can give our staff a pulse on what needs to be done to truly connect with the local community?

I do feel like there is some effort being made in the realm of promotional items and giveaways, but I don't get the sense that they have a pulse on the community.  Promotions that are based solely on freebees and giveaways are part of the equation, but also extremely generic.  Some inspiration is needed.  THey need help with how to manage game day atmospheres, and engaging fans in more ways than just freebees and game-day handouts.  Also, FFR said it and I'll say it again: you can find incredible inspiration at the Minor League Baseball level.

Savanah Bananas
Look up Jim Paul.  I would dig into his El Paso Diablos career and find inspiration from all his wacky ideas.  From 1970s all the way into the 1990s, he revolutionized minor league baseball while running the El Paso Diablos.  His tactics led the Diablos to the forefront of the minor leagues, breaking attendance records across multiple decades and 2 different stadiums, and his influence bled into the Major Leagues.  He became AD at NMSU in the 1990s.

yeah, i didn't realize how crazy it was until i looked at the SEC standings.

If anyone has a good argument why we should get into the tournament over the teams above the red line, i'm all ears. At best, the argument is we are equal to those teams... and guess who's going to win the discussion on that come tourney time

Because they won't even be .500 in league play. Which, in my opinion, should be one of the basic metrics of even being in consideration for an at large.

And they may struggle to get to 20 wins, which is my second metric that should be met to be considered for an at large.

There will still be a spot for mid majors in the NIT with the new 16-team Vegas tournament that'll be broadcast on Fox Sports. The new event that thinks it'll be the most attractive alternative for power conference brands that didn't make the Big Dance.
