Like UTSA, the Mean Green joined the AAC in 2023,

 increasing its annual television revenue by over $1 million. However, the investment has always been there: UNT constructed DATCU Stadium for $78 million in 2011. The Mean Green went from four straight Sun Belt Conference titles from 2001-2004 to not seeing another one until 2017 in Conference USA. However, the new head coach, Eric Morris, has put them on the right path through an elevated G5 conference, leading the team to two bowl-game appearances in his three years so far.
