“A team like Memphis needs its top three or four guys to get 15 shots a game to be successful,” Walker said. “A team like us, it can be five to eight shots per guy. That makes us tougher to guard. I’ll take what we have over what most teams in the country have.”

“The culture is what got everyone here,” Lorient said. “We’re a bunch of hardworking guys who want to win.”

The Mean Green are just fine with being the Virginia of the AAC, a defensive-focused team that plays at a slow pace, spreads the ball around and — most importantly — wins.

“This is one of the closest teams I’ve been on since I started out in AAU,” Walker said. “We’re close off the court. Multiple times this year guys have said they’re sad this is our last year together because of how close we have gotten in a short period of time.

“We’re playing for each other.”
