I Strongly Disagree.

We beat Minnesota on the road (who just knocked off #20 Michigan).
We beat good ORSt, AppSt. & UNI teams.
We beat the current 1st place AAC team (UAB).

We have people on gmg.com that don't think we're a good (MBB) program until you're T25.  CFB brands and rankings shape their view of MBB brands and rankings.

I don't think these wins you listed look meaningful to the casual fan.  Which is unfortunate.

How about we beat someone first? We lost all the meaningful match-ups so far.

I get it, if NT wins; it is because the competition is bad.

If NT loses, it is because NT is a bad team.

Do you not find a little wrong with that analysis?

Elaboration on that a bit:

Teams NT has lost to:

McNeese St. 61-68 away, MS is 12-5 and undefeated at home, lost to #2 Alabama away 73-80.

Utah St.  57-61 neutral, USU is 16-2 including a win over #20 San Diego St.

High Point 71-76 away, High Point is 10-1 at home, and like NT no one wants to play them; so their home schedule is not the toughest.

Memphis 64-68 away, One of NT's best games that has just about been ignored by the general press;  Memphis is supposed to walk over the conference not get a last minute home win over a league opponent.

This only applies to football.

Than why are you posting it in the basketball section?

Just drawing parallels. Sure, I will start a new thread in football just to reference this thread. 🙄

I like how sports reference provides the SRS (simple rating system) score and SOS for each of our teams going back to 49-50. Right now the current team has the second highest SRS, behind our NIT championship team.

Pretty crazy that the 6 teams of this decade comprise the entire top 6 in our school history. The Blakeley and Spika teams are the next highest, even above the Johnny Jones years. Spika years definitely had impressive results in a good conference.

Cool, fun find @BillySee58.  If anyone else is curious, here's football.  Not trying to derail, so maybe worthy of its own thread in that forum.

Pre-1980 teams dominate the T10, lone exception being 2013 HOD Bowl winner.  Also, interesting to see this past 2024 season so high.

Does SOS rankings factor in top teams refusing to play you?

I think a lot of casual fans think of Brands instead of actual college basketball teams when comparing teams.  A loss to McNeese, High Point, and Utah St to most of the public appears bad.

That's only because most of the public is retarded. Never underestimate the stupidity of the average person.

The team has had some quality wins, but they haven't had a Q1 win, and UNT teams of the past have had those victories.  However this team does play together very well, no single player is carrying the all the weight, and just about every bucket they get takes 5 guys doing their job.

The defense is usually consistent.  It's the offense that has lulls, gets stagnant, has difficulty against better opponents.  More work needed.

I think today's teams (UNT) will have a difficult time legitimately being labeled "Best Ever" due to annual turnover. Teams in the past were together 2-4 years with very rare transfers. 2 year guys were always Juco transfers as teams were mostly built through HS recruiting. In general, the benches were deeper because guys couldn't transfer (without sitting out). Fans got a chance to embrace the players/team more resulting in larger crowds.

I never said bad. Your post proves my point. We lost all the games that we needed to win to prove we are a very good team. This is a good team. Just not great, as your post demonstrates. As others have pointed out, those losses mean NIT at best unless they win the conference tournament.

I think we’re a good team that’s trending up. An at large bid is unlikely…we’d have to win all/most of our games, strong showing in the Conference Tourney, and have no surprise teams taking any auto bids.  NIT is still a GREAT tournament.  It doesn’t get the media hype,  but it’s good basketball.
