I was flipping channels last night and saw a few minutes of Texas Southern hosting Grambling.  How is Johnny Jones not in our Hall of Fame?

We're probably waiting until he can attend the induction ceremony some year.

Considering the induction usually takes place in the fall during football season, I would think this would be easy.  I was surprised when I realized he wasn't already inducted.

I feel like that's only been in the last handful of years.  Didn't it used to be in the Spring sometime?

I honestly don’t know.

Great question. I though he was.

Why should he be?  Jones's record as a HC at NT is 91-89, not exactly HOF worthy.  NT's standard for coaches inclusion is apparently more a result of longevity than success.

He did have a descent run and a Western Division championship, and was an excellent representative of NT.   So he will get in the HOF.  Frankly, NT just has not historically had enough success to warrant the crazy numbers of hof inductees.

Where did you get those numbers?  He was 190-146 at North Texas with only two losing seasons in 11 years as the head coach.  He took us to  two NCAA tournaments and was a great representative of our school.

Agree 100% with GrandGreen about UNT's HOF. It is totally embarrassing to bring in (annually) a collection of  average/decent athletes and coaches.

Jimmy Gales' led 1988 team went to the NCAA tournament

Jimmy Gales record at UNT is also 84-118.  JJ's has the third highest winning percentage behind MacCasland and Blakeley.

Not hard I just looked it up in the NT records.  However, I was in error in my statement: this was his conference record.  I used this data to mediate the different of out of conference scheduling on evaluating his performance.

I know we've had some questionable additions, but Coach Jones definitely deserves to be in our HOF.  He resurrected a program that hadn't won much in about 15 years and made it a routine contender in the league we were in, getting to two NCAA tournaments and nearly making it a couple of other times.  For many programs that would not be HOF worthy, but for us?  Hell yes it is - otherwise we'd have about 30 total people in the HOF.

I mean...when your programs only bring in a collection of average/decent athletes...it's kinda your only option, or no HoF at all
