So Coach Morris is overstating things regarding Mr. Mestemaker? How many more are going to come on and pick apart Coach Morris's expertise regarding QB's? He may or may not have been a significant part of the development and ultimate skillsets of two very impressive QB's (Mahomes and Ward) but he was certainly around them long enough to recognize traits of outstanding QB's. And so because of this experience (and expertise), he named Mr. "M" the first back-up to CM, way back at the beginning of the season. And this was with two QBs in the mix with state championships in their resume

SO, after Friday's performance by one of the most unlikely QB candidates in North Texas history, who the hell knows what he's talking about? Coach Morris, or the "my $100 bill is wrinkled" crowd?

If that was a response to my comment, you clearly misunderstood my point.  Perhaps I would have better described it as "effusive praise" rather than "over-the-top praise."

It was just another comment amongst many others, in other threads. Including the "pump the breaks" etc. I need to go do something else, and so I just picked this thread to say something, while all my brain cells are focused.

EM knows quarterback traits when he sees them. In this I very much trust!

EM is also a can of Red Bull and gets really excited easily.

Putting all this together I think EM is really excited about year 3. He’s been saying this for 2 years now. He sees the promise of the season to come. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun in Denton this fall.

Yeah, my comment said nothing about Mestemaker's performance, which I thought under the circumstances could easily fall in the "great" category.

And none of that means a thing without defense. Let's hope our new DC can get some big bodies on the line and teach tackling instead of tickling

Our Bowl was a loss, as most here thought it would be, because of the players that left.

But because of the players that stayed it was an exciting game, better than most believed it could be.   And the side story of our new, inexperienced QB gained us extra National media.

We got a month of extra practice for the team and found a surprise player.

Honestly, this is probably the least significant thing you wrote.  I stated in a thread a week or so ago that losing a bowl game only really matters to the diehard fans of the school.  What most people will remember (because the announcers said it a hundred times) is that North Texas started a freshman walk-on QB who hadn’t started a game since his freshman year in high school on the B-team and he passed for almost 400 yards and almost led them to victory.  I almost feel bad for TxSt because their win was the 2nd biggest story of the game.

Umm, tell that to Coach Morris. He's already talking about Drew being a franchise QB in the NFL.

Morris said. "I think you saw the athleticism, the accuracy, the decision-making. I wouldn't be surprised if in 15 years, Drew Mestemaker's playing football still."

The way things are heading, he could also simply be alluding to new NCAA rule changes that will allow players to remain in eligible forever.

@SUMG - THANK YOU for posting this.  I was going to do the same thing so you saved me some time.  Glad to see the  national media sees what occurred yesterday at the same time we had moronic hot sports takes tagged under "We picked the wrong quarterback"  and "So sick of the crap this football program slings us".  Pretty sure most of us expected to get blown out (let me raise my hand) with so many hitting the portal, so IMO we played a really solid game and barely lost.

For those people that constantly berate all things UNT and are never happy, it's a New Year -- find something that DOES make you happy.  Back to the point, great article by ESPN.  Very eye opening and well done!  🙂

See there people like you are the problem accepting mediocrity.  😉🤣🤣. Well that is what I was told when I was pleasently surprised by a competitive bowl game that our team had the ball in late with a chance to win.  And the waxing nostalgic for SL who was 0-5 in bowl games (without his conference leading QB jumping into the transfer portal before those bowl games) was  particularly ridiculous.

This is no way that you believe this. He has uncertainties and unproven commodities getting ready to line up and go play. Back up QB from Miami, HS QB, Walk on QB, patchwork OL, CUSA level defense (we hope), question marks at RB, a WR corps that will be interesting to see grow (we hope), etc. There is no "excitement" for year 3 going into this with all the rules in place. There are more things we don't know than we do know going into year 3. Eric Morris might as well be in year 1 of the job.

Well, since he installed him as the #2 back at the beginning of the season, I don't think it was a surprise to Coach Morris.

In today’s world, we don’t have a 3rd year program/coach. We had 77 new players this year. We’ll have a lot of new players next year at key positions. Instead of a 3rd year coach, we’ll have our 3rd, 1st year coach. It’s going to be that way every year. If he comes back next year, we will have our 4th, 1st year coach. How could it be otherwise with such turnover on our roster every year. I’m not being negative about it. But it’s a fact.

Hopefully he brings in the right combination next year and they’re a lot better than the combination we had this year.

So here’s the other side of the “no loyalty in this era” coin.

Here’s a kid that has been waiting since 9th grade. Put the work in. Made it to QB2. Never got a shot to play during the season even though our starter was obviously injured.

Now he gets his shot and proves himself x 1000

But what does he get to see? Watches his head coach go out and get the sexy new toy to come in here from Miami. Is he going to get a shot to compete for the job? How much $$ is the new kid getting to come here? Were promises made?

The HC didn’t show the QB he had any loyalty. He looked for a bigger better deal. And that’s just “a business decision”

So It goes both ways.

**and before you say it, I know he got the Miami kid before the bowl but he’s seen him every week all season. Even said he could see him playing for a long time.

I see Morris recruited QBs even though he has a potential QB1.  That's it.  That's normal.  I don't see betrayal.

I didn’t say it was betrayal.

I just don’t want to hear about kids “not showing loyalty” to a school when that school will always look to replace them if something they think is better comes along.

it works both ways. That’s all I was saying.

You can never have enough QBs, or any position player for that matter in this era.   With injury and portal it's just good to have as many options as you can for a long season.   You may need any and all backups in a Bowl.

I have to disagree with this to some extent.  EM absolutely looks like a better “QB Whisperer” and OC than Seth, Dodge, Dickey, and whoever Mac had on his staff.  That isn’t a small thing IMO.  The uncertainty comes from the defensive side of the ball and the general state of all G5 with NIL and an out of control transfer portal.

I think I lot of us underestimate how detrimental retaining Seth was for our last year in CUSA.  In 6 years, he had clearly demonstrated the biggest games he could win here were as playing spoiler with nothing substantial on the line for the Mean Green.

I am not endorsing Morris because I wouldn’t have hired him in the first place.  The appetite for the leadership and fans for a radically different risky move at the head coaching position isn’t there.  So it is pointless to kick and scream in disappointment in Morris at this point because they aren’t going to swing for the fences whenever they replace him due to lack of winning.

This probably is not politically correct but back in the day my response to this post would be " some people would bitch if they were hung with a new rope." Now I can't say this in the world today, so I am not, but if I could this is what I would say.

"Some people would bitch if ____________" comment implies there is nothing to bitch about. You are the problem.

Seth Littrell = Eric Morris.

Inflated stats, empty yards, goose eggs laid when crucial drives are needed. It's all the same by both.

Perhaps, but I am going into 2025 with my cup half full instead of half empty. Besides, all the bitching has accomplished nothing and reinforces that repeating the same behavior expecting a different result is the definition of insanity.
