I’ll say this. At a school like ours, you gotta go against the grain to win here. Save for Mason Fine’s incredible sophomore and junior seasons, our way at any kind of winning has been thru the boring running game and a punishing defense. Granted, that may no be feasible anymore with the fact that Texas/Oklahoma HS basically is glorified 7-on-7 and we don’t produce great linemen anymore on either side of the ball, but the best teams we have had were with Scott Hall at QB and with Derek Thompson at QB, both with killer defenses and special teams.

These Spread Offense disciples won’t ever win much here. They don’t hit nearly enough in practices to help your defense tackle and they stack up tons of empty numbers too often.

Okay…say that he is. If he can’t field a competent defense he’s not going to win games or championships or any games that matter, despite your QB throwing for 400+ yards. The defense has been a problem for a long time. It wasted Mason Fines career and it’s going to waste the career of any QB that comes here

I dumped pretty hard on Messmaker when I saw him as a walkon QB2. Today he's earned my excitement for next season. Those throws were really really good.

If Picklebarge comes and competes next year, I have some confidence in the offense. Just for the love of sweet crispy christ, fix the defense!

Also, can we please get some QBs with easier to spell names? Maybe a smith or a Johnson?

How has Texas State and UTSA done it?

No disrespect intended but what have they done? They've had a few good years but they have not become Boise State. And yes, I know we are currently beneath them.

What a silly question, even for you.

Defense.

Rick

The same defense that allowed 450 yards to a QB making his first start since freshman year of HS?

About the other team. That UTSA defense was 83rd in FBS this year BTW.

Getting a QB to stay for 7 years helped UTSA immensely…and Texas State can hit, which tells me they can tackle, too.

What's UTSA's excuse for this year? 83rd in defense in yards allowed but they figured it out.

He proves it again by an unbelievable performance by a less than no name qb. This is why I lobbied for him to be our coach. Excited about next year.

Come on man. Get your standards up lol.

I don't totally disagree, defense needs massive improvements.  I was so heated today when we brought pressure on passing downs and DBs played off and head up leverage... Teach you at the most basic of levels of football at QB pressure try to throw a slant.  If DB leverage is inside and takes that away throw the fade.  We seemed good with giving up both a 5 yard hitch route, or slant all night.  Brutal. If offense plays to their average of 34.8 (kick FG at half, and FG on 4th down) were pretty damn close and maybe the ball game looks different?  GMG

Yeah, that defense, which is 47th in yards allowed, came within a whisper of beating the current Big 12 Champion this season, finished with 9 wins and a second bowl championship in a row.

And UTSA finished 71st in Yards Allowed Per Game.  That’s not a world beater defense but it’s a far cry better than 125th.  Maybe that’s why they’re 4-1 vs North Texas the past five years?

Lots of passing yards but loses the bowl game.  The new QB fits in well with the UNT culture.

Please leave this forum and stop attending games. You're better off learning karate and virtual wig making.

He doesn’t want to hear it. He wants to see us pass for 400 yards and score 28 points while our defense stops nobody when it counts…it’s just how it is around here.

Untjim: Texas/Oklahoma doesn't produce great linemen anymore so we can't have great defenses.

Me: how does UTSA and Texas State do it?

Rick: defense

Untjim: he doesn't want to hear it

Hear what? Y'all are simultaneously saying the state doesn't produce great linemen which is necessary for a good defense but then say other G5 teams in our same state with our same pool of players are succeeding because of defense.

Again, if they can do it why can't we? What's their excuse?
