Take away his 2 FCS Texas (ACU and SFA) wins and in two seasons Morris is now 0-5 against in-state FBS teams.  So much for those Texas ties everyone seems to want to put as the number 1 priority in hiring a head football coach.  

He's 6-10 (.375) against conference opponents...those teams we are suppose to be able to compete against.  He was lucky in that 4 of those 6 wins came against Temple and Tulsa who went a combined 13-35 (.270) in the last two seasons. 

Seriously, given his performance here (and elsewhere for that matter) what exactly gives everyone so much hope that he's the guy to take us to the next level?

I think there are legitimate concerns, and legitimate reasons for optimism.

Can you at least clarify?  I could point a scope at nearly any staff in the country, no matter where they are in tenure, and find some amount of uncertainty.

In 2 years has this staff addressed any of the concerns we've had since the beginning? This year's team was almost a carbon copy of last year's; fast offense and poor defense, vaunted offense sputters out at key times when defense does play well, poor game management by Morris, same undersized lines, same almost could have won that game scenarios, etc. Going into year 3 how do we know any of that will change? We don't, hence the uncertainty.

For sure.

I think you'll always have some issues that will be attacked.
I think you'll also, with any staff, have some issues that are just tendencies and won't go away.

The former, we know that Morris is trying a new DC
The latter, for example, I'm not holding my breathe for the QB under center any time soon.

Season one; kick the field goals in 3 of the games we end up with an 8-4 record. This year, kick the field goals in 2 games plus 1 bowl game we finish the year 8-5. Morris has been really close just made some bad coaching decision going for it on 4th and 1. Improve the defense and we may be really good next year. We need bigger bodies on the offensive and defensive lines. That my take, I’m rooting for the Elf!

Are we confident in our young kicker, though? I remember the one game EM tried to take the 3 points and our K missed it. Seems like nothing is given with this team. IIRC, he was rated as a pretty good kicker, but I don’t know what happened.

In fairness, his losses are to teams with a combined conference record of 68-19 over the past two seasons.  We’ve gotten a bad draw of playing the top 3-4 teams in conference both seasons in the AAC.

Not really disagreeing with you, just pointing out we’ve played all the best teams aside from not playing Navy this year.  I haven’t looked at other team’s schedules, but I’m pretty sure we’ve had the hardest conference schedule the past two years.

      Where do we go from here?

      I really feel like these influences come from outside the university. I feel like there’s a vision of what our university’s role is supposed to be in the overall scheme of Texas universities, and it does not include NT being a big factor in major sports.

      I don't know who controls the leashes and muzzles for Athletics Admins now? Many years ago Athletics at UNT was told "hands off" from big University donors. They had to go find their own new donors. I don't see a lot of any marketing or reach-out to community or alums with Jared & Co.

      Maybe it’s time for division iii. I have a lot of disdain for nfl, and the same for this version of ‘college’ sports. As for this dude, they could have seen the writing on the wall. It’s right in the name. He is a leaver.

      Sadly I have to agree with the concept there has been a continuing failure of the university leadership to go directly to the community and alumni at large and make a pitch. I can’t tell if it’s because they have always been too proud to beg for it, or if it’s because they have been told not to by their overlords in the state government, who are more committed to the other state and even private universities.

      The SEC and Big10 are like the college version of the NFL to most G5 and HS player$. You get a call up and supposedly you are set financially. This case (aired publicly) showed a player had a set deal for his full college career at Tennessee for $8mil. They went to the CFP his first season (last season). Then his agent decides he should get paid more. Tennessee says no. The agent floats his name to Oregon in January; they say no and tell Tennessee he is being shopped. Before the last practice of spring, right before the spring game...and before the spring portal opens, again the player asks for more. Tennessee says no again. The player sits out practice and says he intends to enter the portal. Tennessee says see ya! I know people say players should be on contracts, but this kid was, and still wanted to hold out for more. The same things are happening in the NFL with players right before their last year of contracts wanting to sit out and not play until they get re-negotiated. Agents have the kid's ear...and it's all about $$.
