Its an exhibition game, a consolation, it doesn't count for anything.  I think its better to have our program and coaches spend December focused on building a team and staff for the fall rather then a meaningless bowl game.

Awful take. We've won like 3 bowl games in our history. When the opportunity presents itself to store hardware into a cabinet it needs to be taken advantage of. We never do. With this mindset every game we play is a meaningless exhibition because we will never win or play for a national championship. And to peel it back further, a national championship is meaningless if a bowl trophy is meaningless. It's all meaningless.

Year after year excuses and bullshit!

Texas State just passed us by.  Disgusting!

I get it.  I over react on this board often.  It doesn’t matter to the people making decisions that affect this program.  Hell they don’t respond when my donations drop and I drop season tickets.  But I only have so much negativity to spew per season and I am all tapped out.  Since that blown game against La Tech with the Mean Joe Statue unveiling and the program had the most momentum I have ever seen, leadership has been making bad decisions.   A lot of us FIRST GUESSED and questioned most if not ALL the moves made since that day.

Maybe invest some of that energy in our Basketball program. 🤷🏽‍♂️

I particularly liked the Texas - State Texas - State Eat em up whatever the hell they say after that.  2 loud North - Texas maybe followed up with GMG lol IDK but I liked that it didn't have to slowly fade out after everyone was tired of yelling.

I always thought we should chant "Go Mean Green" on kickoffs.

Make noise before the kick: "Ooooooooooooooohhh"

You'd need to get the athletic department onboard to get the word out to new students at orientation that this is a thing we are trying to do. Also with a prompt on the jumbo-tron to get people in the stadium to start doing it.

Have you seen our alum side? They barely move unless it is to get more nachos, much less trying to chant.

We do alright with the North Texas chant sometimes, we just need to make it a staple and I think people will do it.

After Morris and Sheffield transferred, how many here were actually expecting to win? Many of us were just hoping TXST didn't handle us like they did UTSA this year or Rice in last year's First Responder Bowl.

Sure, it's the head coach's job to have his team ready to play and in position to win regardless of the adversity faced, but it's still incredible the performance Mestemaker had. Tonight was better than any game C. Morris has had since Memphis. Coastal Carolina lost their starting QB to the portal and got dog walked in their bowl game against UTSA in their own building. Yes, the loss increases our bowl futility streak to an active high, and it sucks to lose to an intrastate program in an inferior conference, but that shouldn't take away from Drew's game.

The biggest disappointment to me was how badly we were outnumbered by TXST fans. We went from packing the lower level of the Cotton Bowl to being matched ON OUR OWN SIDE. Like our team, our fans also struggle to wear green.

However, there should be optimism surrounding next season. Eric made a poor hire with his first DC obviously, but made the tough (but right) call in getting rid of him. Next year's presumed starter will be in his last year of eligibility, so no losing another 4000 yard passed before the bowl game.

If we struggle to another 6/7-win season and bowl loss with next year's schedule, I think Eric's seat should be pretty hot again.

If we struggle to another six win season then Morris has to go. Not a “hot seat” let’s see how year four goes.

Have you seen next year's opponents? The serious programs in our conference would look at it and say 10+ wins no questions asked.

*conference schedule isn't set yet

Where did they go?  I'm fairly certain they're still in the Sun Belt.

Bingo! We thought the same thing after the NO Bowl win, and the 2013 bowl win. Yet here we are.

things are fluid in G5. People use “passed us by” too much. It’s a lazy cry for people with FOMO.

its P4 vs the rest of us. That’s the battle.

Great post.

Also, I didn’t spend much time researching, but a very quick Google search shows that teams that played the bowl games without their starting QB were not successful.  I believe USC and Louisville were the only teams to win with a back-up.  UNT, Coastal, Tulane, Cal, Pitt, OU*, Duke, and Miami** lost.
Not having your QB is obviously a big deal.

From the little I’ve seen, we’ve gotten better publicity in a loss due to Mestemakers performance than we would have gotten with a win if Morris had played.  The media absolutely loves the “hasn’t started a game since freshman B team” narrative, and are blown away by his performance***.

*Hawkins started games for OU this year

**Cam Ward played half the game

***thanks to those giving EM some credit for how Mestemaker played.

I was at the game. We have the most uneducated fan base in America. Guy sitting behind me was telling his TX State friend that our fans were mainly family members of players and the band. Idiots like that drive me crazy.

Our cheerleaders try to start the North Texas chant when we are on offense and our band is a shell of what it used to be.

The Band has been a shell of what it used to be for at least a couple of decades. Our cheerleaders are gymnast only. They know nothing about promoting spirit. But then, neither does the Talons and neither does the Band.

Of the 7 bowl games we have lost since 2001 we played 3 in of them with losing records and had no business being invited. The other 4 we were underdogs and lost them all. I am not trying to make  excuses for our bowl game record but trying to put into perspective.

Its different now with the NIL and transfer rules, unless a team is in the playoff, the season is over when the portal opens.  All of these bowl games are meaningless now (outside the playoffs), they start off each bowl game talking about how many players left, these are not even the same teams that played in the season.

This is why I would rather a head coach spend December focused on recruiting players from the portal then preparing for a bowl game.

I think Mestemaker's game has definitely overshadowed TXST's win. His performance was a top story on ESPN.
