You think he will sit as a backup? I would think he would want some touches. Especially since he turned down opportunities else where to be a receiver at larger schools.

No I don't. But who does these day?

I keep seeing someone post that we lost half our team. Outside of Morris and Sheffield, who do we lose that were major contributors?  Mercer?  He was replaced with a three year starter. I did miss Hammond.

I hope Mestemaker is give a shot to start next year. I like him and hope he is put in scholarship asap.

Enjoyed the Texas State fans. We need to play them every year. The coordination between their band, fans and cheer squads is something we should strive for. It is sad that we can’t do the basics like that.

If we did the basics right at all levels we wouldn't be in hole we are in today. We lack a good foundation from top to bottom in many areas.

He’d be a great fit for a place where they actually play complimentary football…

Odd comment after a 30-28 game. Are those 2 points the line of demarcation between playing complimentary football and not?

Well, if you are only talking about this game only, then I can see why you’d ask this…but if you’ve watched the entirety of the Eric Morris tenure, then it would seem the answer would seem more obvious…

I agree yes but hoping it’s Drew but we see Jimmerson in a couple unique sets. Just a couple games and maybe see if we can redshirt him. At least I use to be a huge fan of the redshirt. Now I with the portal bot as much 😕

So, you are either so oblivious you don’t know we brought in a transfer from Miami or you somehow forgot.  Either way, we didn’t bring that kid in to not play.

I think Mestemaker should DEFINITELY get the chance to compete for the job, but he may be caught behind other options who are already penciled in.

Penciled in, but not written in pen or stone!  I'm not a huge fan of Coach Morris, but the one thing he seems to know well is quarterbacks.  Mestemaker, Jimmerson, and Poffenbarger should all compete for the job next season, and I'm sure Morris will pick the best one for his system.  I'm much more worried about the other positions.

Transfer from Miami? Yes I can claim ignorance on that… who is it?

The young qb played better than expected for sure but did account for three TOs as well. Probably shouldn’t have been put in the position for the game to completely rely on his performance but that is what Morris did. 🤷🏻‍♂️

You have to love the idiots who make comments like Southwest Texas State and then most likely get pissed off when people call us North Texas State.

That crap pisses me off. Opponents need to show they did their homework by calling us North Texas Normal.

How many of their starters entered the portal and didn’t play this game? Not good enough

As far as I know, they only had two starters enter the portal and didn't play. I believe they lost their RB and a DE to the portal that were starters. The rest were not starters. I could be wrong because I don't follow their program, but those are the only two that Brett Vito kept mentioning. We lost a stating QB, WR, C, and TE.QB being the most important of all positions for both teams. So, yeah we were at a decided disadvantage when this game started.

The first I put on him, he threw it straight to the defender (I remember saying immediately after that someone HAD to have run a bad route or fallen down for the INT to be that easy)

He saved it from becoming a pick 6 too.

The bottom line is this.   A kid who was making his first start since he was a high school freshman was asked to carry our team in a bowl game…and he damn near pulled it off

I'm reading a lot about this.  I can't find anything definitive, but Drew might have started at safety while he was a senior (maybe junior, too).

I don't think it takes away from the story though.  Not starts at the QB position since he was a HS frosh.  Remarkable.

Let’s look at those turnovers.

The first I put on him, he threw it straight to the defender (I remember saying immediately after that someone HAD to have run a bad route or fallen down for the INT to be that easy)

The second one was a fumble when he was hit from the blind side after literally nobody tried to block the blitzer…a theme, by the way, during this game of defenders running free. Hard to blame the guy when he’s trying to keep his eyes downfield to make something, anything, happen to keep us in the game.

The third one was a desperation heave with (if I recall correctly) 8 seconds or so left in the game with no timeouts.  Again, not sure how much I knock a kid for just trying to make a play there.

The first one was on the play call its a tunnel screen into the boundary in the redzone where all the windows get even tighter and space more condensed.  I put the 1st one on EM, and he gets maybe 5% of the blame as with those screens he's throwing it to a spot anticipating OL/Blockers kicking all defenders to the Sideline and the WR "Tunneling" around said blockers.

The kid played great. and i think given the proper development, him being the starter next season could be a very ok outcome for UNT. He appears to be a "gamer" who has a lovely arm.

That said, while i agree with your assessment of TOs 1 and 3, I saw that second turnover differently. For me that second TO is at least partially on the QB . Yes protection was not great (but in my memory it was not nearly as bad as you describe it), but I still feel like he was trying to accomplish something that was obviously not there on that play, rather than just take a checkdown in a situation where taking the checkdown is fully ok.

Just to be clear, my criticism is towards the head coach, not the kid.
