Than a bowl game we’re about to play in, in Dallas against an in-state opponent that we have historically played more than anyone besides SMU?

8 of the top 17 threads in this forum have NIL and/or transfer portal related thread titles with a handful of the other 9 eventually getting hijacked with NIL/transfer portal discourse.

Could we make this forum actually about the UNT football program again? Of course transfer portal and NIL is very relevant and discourse on it is necessary, but it has completely overtaken this forum to the point where it’s hard to find actual discourse about the team itself and not just in the offseason.

I was talking to Harry the other day, and I mentioned that I may be more excited about going to the UAB Bball game than bowl game.  I am going to both but I am not looking forward to the offense being run by a walk on freshman QB who got a handful of snaps in HS at the position.  Care to change my mind?? 😄

Definitely. Have a large group going to the bowl game, but I’m really more excited about the pre-game with friends and the UNT fanbase, along with all the Texas State fans on the Boulevard. Should make for a lively scene.

The game - who honestly knows what we’re gonna get performance wise? Losing so many key offensive guys leads you to believe the offense won’t exactly be a machine. More interested to see if the defense continues to improve with more practice under Odom before we transition over to Cassity and crew.

The NIL/Transfer portal has put a damper on the bowl game because our top producers on offense are no longer on the team. I'm going to the bowl game but I'm starting to wonder why. The offense will be closer to a spring game offense than what we actually fielded a month ago... because of the transfer portal.

I think Offense will be serviceable, Defense will have their hands full with a tough TX State offense similar to ours.  Very fast tempo, lots of deep shots and screens, as well as a solid Run Game.  The guys we "lost" have all had guys behind them who at one point or another proved they have what it takes to keep the offense humming except the QB which is my only real concern.

I think the threads are more of a flavor of the week stuff. As the game approaches there will be more content regarding the game.   I haven’t heard much about the game from UNT football, but I have heard about TP commits.

I listened to a Texas State podcast yesterday and it didn’t even mention our game with them.

Will there be a coaches show this week?

I hope that you’re right about the offensive guys being able to step in. Not optimistic about our QB situation but would love to be wrong. I want us to be competitive in this game.

Will Mack Leftwich be coaching Texas State's offense since he's been hired to be Texas Tech's OC?

So go to pre game activities and leave, got it.

No sir he is getting Portal visits and Tech offensive roster prepared.

Flip side sounds like we are going into this thing with 2 QB's starter and Tisdale backing him up.  Hopefully under Tisdales tutelage and from the QB Whisperer he learns enough to guide us to victory!

Hopefully that evens things out for our defense a bit.

I don't doubt our offense will be ready to go in some capacity. May not be 50 passes but they'll get their yards on the ground.

I like it, a portal NIL board like the realignment board. I’d be totally down with this.

On another note. We should create a bowl trophy for this game. They did with the Vanderbilt Georgia Tech game which was actually a trophy they played for many years ago.

My suggestion. The Silver Reel because weren’t both programs featured in Necessary Roughness? The Silver Reel could sit on the sidelines with winner hoisting it up alongside the First Responders trophy. 🏆

Good chance we end up in a league with TSU and anytime we battle, that trophy with engraved scores could make an appearance.

This can be the trophy.  Just add a base.

To many this is the offseason.  This game win or lose will be forgettable in UNT football history unless a future All-American, or NFL Starter makes a splashy debut in this game.  There isn’t that much to discuss with the modified roster not representing what the 2024 team was nor probably the best starters for the 2025 Mean Green roster.  Leading passer, receiver, rusher, tackler, and best graded coverage player are equally likely to enter the transfer portal or end up as 2nd string next season.

I was going to suggest a golden armadillo, but I think you've got a winner.  It could be golden...

But what to call it?

The golden armadillo is solid, too.

The offense will be serviceable with a walk on freshman QB? That is a very optimistic view. If he squeaks out a win, then it would be an all-time great North Texas moment.

Yes serviceable, I think they can manage 21/24 points I'd say that is serviceable, The pieces we lost all replaced production from the previous guy who was playing in front of them, the only one that is a giant ? is QB which I stated in the original post.  As long as he doesn't try and go hero mode (I dont think Morris will allow it).  We will see quick game, short to intermediate called concepts, quick screens, and occasional shot plays off of play action.  Serviceable to me means you have a CHANCE to maybe win.

It's not an either/or situation.  We can't talk bowl games without talking NIL/portal because those rules have stripped anything of value away from those games.

Who wants to see an anemic UNT offense and no DC take on the leftovers of texas state?

Will I go and cheer? F* yeah. But I'll also be drinking myself into a moderate coma of which I have great doubt my wife will approve of.

Bowl games have lost their prestige. Too many teams, too many bowls, too few people to cheer for anymore.

This is the very effect NIL has had on our fans...knowing our star QB and receiver have bailed out into the Portal for more NIL somewhere else.

Plus EM basically admitted the defense was a mess and needed a new leader and fixing.

All this has taken away from the excitement of a Bowl,,  We will still cheer for NT....and maybe they will surprise us!!??

How much time was actually spent talking transfer portal rather than the game just a few days ago during this press conference? Morris was obviously more excited talking about next year than this game.
