This guy is wasting his time and everyone else’s time.  Dude should have found a FCS program with an academic program he was actually interested in.  He is going to be 25 soon with nothing to show for it except maybe a “general studies” degree that nobody respects.  And may have some student loans if he is extra stupid.

I would like to “appreciate”. Interesting choice of words.

"I would like to appreciate" . . . but no matter how hard he tries, he can't make himself actually appreciate UAB?

Unfortunately they are mimicking the behavior of businesses that can behave that way.  Nobody gets pensions anymore and few get favorable stock options as front line employees.  Loyalty is seldom rewarded in the business world.   In college sports I wish it were different.  They had the power to do that but leadership, schools, coaches and conferences didn't want to make sacrifices to make that work.  🤷🏽‍♂️

Finally someone else who gets it.

Companies don’t owe you a retirement. That’s your responsibility. If they offer that, it’s fine, but no small business employee has a pension—they have to save in a 401k or IRA. And most pensions are extremely costly To manage and the payouts very often end up benefitting the pension more than the employee or their beneficiaries.

And I don't owe any company my undying loyalty. Works both ways.

But I am seeing this kind of behavior in the private sector job sector too as I am sure you are as well. There seems to be something going on and a lot of folks have shifted to a very opportunistic mind set.

People woke up to how companies use, abuse and shortchange employees. How many people missed family events, worked a millions hours of overtime and rarely came home only to be fired or laid off to save costs?

Too many old geezer Boomers pulled the ladder up and thought just because they let the previous generations kick them around, that the younger gens would take the same treatment.

If I died at my job, they would clock me out, roll my corpse out the door and post a help wanted sign regardless of how much loyalty I showed to the job.

And you as an employee owe the company nothing except your labor while you are on the clock.  But thank you for highlighting what the "disloyal" younger generation is responding to.  🤣

Since this thread has taken an 180 degree turn, I will just add on.  As an employee of a company that has shown it cares and has a great culture, and one that has allowed me to work into a position of leadership, I will add that many, not all, but many of today's employees that are entering the market have a since of entitlement and are not as willing to put in the time to start and work up through the ranks.

Maybe tech has a role in this? The amount of power the individual has seems crazy compared to my parent's gen.  You can build your brand in various social media outlets, reach an infinite audience, and have so much more control over your career growth.

Previous gen was at the mercy of their employer, a phone,  and how far they were willing to drive.

(This could be complete BS.  I just like thinking about these cultural things)

And I have worked for companies that don't offer even a 401K, much less a pension! I would think that no 401K is very uncommon in the DFW metroplex. Yes, I call it the ZERO 1K.  And I was a corporate level manager at one time with nothing! The job market is definitely broken here in KY (I still have no 401K) but at least you can readily find employment with a 401K plan down there to help build retirement funds tax free. I do think the employer owes the employee a 401K at a minimum for being allowed to operate in the world's only super power country.

That same working model is what was happening in college football though. Offer the players almost nothing until the system self-destructs. And here we are, an oligarchy type college football system unfolding. Even SMU $$ can't crack this system now.

For the record, I think SMU is a very good school.

It's just a cultural artifact. Downsizing and treating employees like anonymous spreadsheet entries was not always so prevalent and along with that employees moved less, and were looked on poorly if they moved too much. None of those things are 'caused' directly by another, they move together.

If you look at Japan, they are still in a world where companies lay off less frequently and employees move less frequently, despite technology.
