I'll be there. How is everyone feeling as we enter conference play? Overall I'm feeling good.

We are 2nd in NET in the conference. The two best publicly available models, KenPom and Bart Torvik, have us as the 2nd best team in conference and finishing that way. Our defense has been really good; it's actually better than last season. The biggest improvement is in the defensive rebounding. We are pulling down 74.8% of defensive boards compared to 68% last year.

Of course the team isn't without concerns. Although we start the same lineup every game, we haven't found a consistent closing one. There isn't a 'go to' scorer. The shot creation and/or shooting has been lacking in long stretches. So far our adjusted offensive efficiency is the lowest it's been since the 2019 season, but I don't think (hope) it will necessarily stay that way.

I'd be disappointed if we don't finish at least top 4 in conference. The conference, as others have noted in many threads, just isn't as good as last season. Last season there were 4 other teams in the top 100 of KenPom and 7 in the top 150. This season there are 2 other teams in the top 100 and 5 in the top 150. Last year in conference we played 3 Q1 games and 5 Q2 games; this year we're projected to play 1 Q1 game and 3 Q2 games.

A top 4 finish in conference means that we would need to win 3 games in Ft. Worth to go to the big dance. That's always the dream. The NIT as the consolation prize wouldn't be bad either. Could we host a NIT game again? Last year Indiana St., Princeton, and Bradley hosted opening round games. That would be a fun atmosphere.

This year seems to be the year of which top 3/4 teams will find a way to lose a game or 2 to one of the teams in the bottom 1/2 of the league and cause them to gain a L in the L column that will drop them for tournament seeding/ regular season conference championship.

I say that as this isn't the year you can rely on the middle 5-9 to help even the Loss column out if you happen to fall to one of the lower half teams in conference.  IMO there is a clear 1-4/5 and after that a substantial drop in the level of competition.

Consistency and efficiency on offense are the biggest concerns to me.  And as mentioned, no go-to shooter.  We have long periods of stagnant offense.  10 passes around the horn to end up with a rushed, unplanned shot is not a good offense.  Multiple missed layups and free throws each game are also a concern.

Fox Sports is launching a new post-season tourney this year.  Thus, the NIT is changing it's selection process to combat it. (think more Brand name teams to lure viewers and sponsors)...

AI Overview

Yes, the NIT is changing its selection process for the 2025 tournament, with the most significant change being the allocation of "exempt" bids to the top two non-NCAA Tournament teams from the ACC and SEC, essentially giving them automatic bids to counter the new College Basketball Crown tournament launched by Fox Sports; this change is primarily aimed at maintaining relevance in the evolving college basketball postseason landscape.

Key points about the new NIT selection process:
  • "Exempt" bids:
16 teams will receive "exempt" bids based on their ranking, with the ACC and SEC getting two automatic bids each.

  • Power conference focus:
The new format prioritizes the top non-NCAA Tournament teams from the major conferences, particularly the ACC and SEC, to compete with the College Basketball Crown.

  • Response to competition:
These changes are seen as a response to the new Fox Sports-backed tournament, which has secured deals with the Big Ten, Big 12, and Big East.

I would be disappointed if it's not us and Memphis in the conference title game at Dickies.

Memphis beating #16 Ole Miss the other day was huge for them. If we somehow can pull that win off along with the UAB win, we might be able to get some votes...

the 3 pm start time ( on a work day) will keep me from being at the super pit tomorrow

That's a problem for our Bowl also on Friday.

I think the 3pm kickoff on a workday will keep some locally from attending and many Nationally from watching.

Definitely agree that there is a steeper drop off in the bottom half of the conference this season. There are 4 teams that are 200+ in KenPom. That doesn't even include Rice who lost to our little brother.

Love the spirit. We are capable of being there, and winning the title game, but right now the offense gives me too much reservation to necessarily consider anything else a disappointment.

I am holding out hope that the guys are still trying to find their stride glueing together offensively.  I'd like to see Walker, Massie cut / drive hard to the basket.  I'd also like to see some actual sets to get Wright some nice easy uncontested or semi contested shots early that way when he has to make much more difficult ones late in shot clock he's seen a few go in.  I am also really excited about Lorient's progression offensively, he seems to be more confident each game.  If we can get Jossell, Floyd and Sissoko to just provde 8/10 each and Sissoko will grab 10-12 Boards I really like our chances against most teams in the league.  Memphis being the massive outlier as their talent level is through the roof and it appears that Hardaway has figured out the "culture" of his program as his guys are all seemingly playing together and not to get theres.

Agreed. We’ve got to run some action to free Wright up to get some uncontested shots consistently. He seems to be a pretty quality shooter, but unlike Edwards and Perry, does not have the 1 on 1 game to create his own shot.
