Honestly,  he wasn't bad. He wasn't great. It was absolutely a big step down from Morris. He earned it as a backup, but I have zero idea what his competition even looked like

I always wonder in a case where your backup quarterback has so very little experience how much you practice time he's getting with the team. I guess we'll find out soon how close he is to being ready now that he's been getting more practice.

Mestemaker backed up Duece Adams (Louisville qb) in HS.

We'll see how their college careers pan out.

This same thing happened with Jason Bean backing up Chandler Rogers in HS.

Inb4 Deuce Adams ends up at UNT in a few years.

I assume we will see more young guys jumping in the portal soon with all of these transfers. Especially on the receiving side.

Why? Those guys actually have a path to getting on the field or already are. Cash didn’t have a path to getting on the field here. No QB is going to stay to backup a guy with the same amount of remaining eligibility.

he didn't even get the chance to go broke from buying gold chains. shame.

Not many get that chance at UNT. Hence why so many leave. His opportunity to make horrid financial decisions is well on his horizon unless he is actually an FCS/D2 talent.

By all means let's not give any credit to Mestemaker.

I think it's great he won the backup job in camp and got on the field a few times.  He is 4/5 for 69 yards!

But I really hate throwing him to the Wolves, er Bobcats, and his first start in a Bowl game.  No pressure.  This is the bad side of all the NIL/Portal garbage this time of year.

50th time, Jason Bean did not backup Rogers. The coach alternated series with Rogers. I attended 3 games and followed Lake Ridge on TV during the playoffs. In fact, I don't remember Rogers playing deep in the playoffs.

Where did you hear EM speak?

He talked about von Grote in a presser or some media, I think before the season started. I don't have the source but I'm sure it is out there somewhere.

$100?  I bought mine for way less from the ticket office. $44, I think.

I wasn’t sure I could go. Found out I can and they are now starting at $104 through the athletic’s website.

You think so?  We only brought in two receivers?  We’re losing DT, Ward, and Rempert.  EM likes to run 8 receivers.

Headed to Nevada.

Back to Cash,  the more I hear, the more I think someone significant in his life is giving him bad advice. He didn’t forget how to be a QB over night, but he had also been the man in HS for a couple of years. Moving up to D1 ball and realizing you aren’t head and shoulders above others, that you are going to have to work hard and may have to wait your turn isn’t what he and “his advisors” expected. He got passed by and instead of working hard and trying to improve, he decides to move along. Decisions like this will not serve him well later in life.

I think Morris basically told the QB's that they would be using the portal going forward looking for guys they have playing experience. Another 6 win season and they lose their jobs. So no time to develop freshman and take their lumps. Their jobs rest on Puff being the man. Already hearing rumblings that Jimerson looking to get out after the spring. And possibly Mestemaker. No hope for young guys playing with this staff.

This whole portal and NIL thing has not been too kind to the high school player and has hindered their options.  We all wish Cash the best out there.

Then why recruit them in the first place?

Probably FCS or D2, if you could not beat out a walk-on in an air raid system, guessing we were not going to see him in Bowl Game was clincher, add in Jimmerson the writing was on the wall

I wouldn't judge Cash McCollum too harshly over not getting playing time. Drew Mestemaker didn't get any playing time either and when he finally did the whole world could see he'd been wrongly overlooked on the bench.

Decisions like that are being made all over college football by quarterbacks and sometimes it works out really well for them, like both our Chandlers having strong seasons at UNT because they quit someplace else.

It sucks as a fan, of course, but until schools have financial help paying their own players more to stay I don't see how this gets fixed.

And what is your connection to the program?

What if Puff isn't the man and someone like Jimmerson or Mestemaker are just obviously better or outperform him in the the spring?  This, if true, seems rather short-sighted when Puff hasn't even taken a snap here and hasn't proven to be the best option.
