Vito writes for a paper in a town that is almost completely apathetic to the program, with a sizable portion that absolutely loathes our athletic teams’ existence. Nobody with a brain should ever be surprised that Vito isn’t a UNT homer—he writes to cater to the 100 people that read the newspaper still.

Here’s a couple of North Texas/DR-C fun facts.

At one time, the DR-C beat writer was a guy names Jerry Reeves, like the popular country/novelty song singer.  He and I had a fairly “out in the open” feud in the Letters to the Editor column.  He was very critical of North Texas Athletics.

Randy Cummings covered North Texas for a long time.  When he left, I wrote in my Letter to the Editor note about Jerry Reeves, “Where is Randy Cummings when you need him ?”  Randy is the official scorer at almost every North Texas home basketball game.  He’s the handsome man in the black and white striped shirt.

Jerry Reed?

Reeves was before my time, but Cummings, if anything, was a homer. And I loved it. He didn't shine light on a bad team, but he generally presented North Texas positively. His stories, almost daily during the season by my recall, always ended with an "Eagles Notes" section that had a series of tidbits about players and coaches. Loved reading about North Texas as it was presented by Randy Cummings.

But honestly, I love reading Vito's work also. Because any coverage of NT football adds to the information than I can get from other sources or on my own.

A very true statement about the apathy toward North Texas Athletics. I find the lack of support appalling. I loathe every Denton HS product who fails to even acknowledge that NT recruits them. This would never happen in Lubbock, San Antonio, Stillwater, and now even in Dallas. A great deal of NTs lack of success goes right back to the town as well as apathetic students. If NT was in Lewisville or Frisco attendance and enthusiasm would be double at the least. Denton far from being dynamic is a horn tooters paradise.

I am not the first to suggest that if NT were about as far away from DFW as Waco is, we would have a more enthusiastic following. Lubbock, I always thought, is too far from the Metroplex but its isolation and being the only game in town, is quite admirable for its Red Raider fervor.

For the 500th time, quit catering to weirdo students in the admission processes. They become your alum base (money pool) and they generally do not care about athletics. However, I'm not sure how anyone financially supports athletics in its current state. I pulled the pocketbook out to make a sizable donation to NIL and gave pause. We then witnessed a basketball exodus. I thought to myself, why would I do this? So, I haven't. And unless serious guardrails are put up, I will not.

I like when Vito makes his predictions and sends this board into a tizzy. The memes are epic.

Vito is lost in sports writer hell.  He lives by the standard that it is the job of sport writer to be neutral.  I imagine he is as tired of covering NT as a lot of NT fans are tired of his coverage.

He is lucky in a way that the DRC is still one of the few newspapers that still exist.  He has won a lot of awards, not only because he is a competent writer; but there is little competition.

The fact that he is still writing for the DRC after all these years and he usually writes his articles as a host of one sentence paragraphs is all you need to know.

Vito is like RV.  Stayed too long in the same job.

I think that has nothing to do with the struggles of our athletic program.  If you loathe the students whose fees pay for athletics do you see how the current students might be uncomfortable around alumni who support athletics?  Lots of those “ weirdo” students and alumni are outside the stadium partying not because they don’t like football it because they don’t enjoy watching us lose or beating a school they wouldn’t take a scholarship from.  Denton natives are far more hostile or dismissive of UNT athletics than your average student.  As a Denton native and UNT alumni I find the disconnect between the local community and athletics confusing.  Also the Dallas Cowboys seem to consume so much of the sports atmosphere there is very little for everyone else.  Cowboys are the ONLY sports franchise in the area that can consistently underachieve and not lose a second of media coverage.

Us sucking has certainly not helped bring in our alum. But, as seen by our basketball successes, our weirdo alum are certainly not flocking to Denton to see our successful basketball program play. If someone takes offense by the word weirdo, thank you for being here and for being a small part of your marginalized (majority at UNT) group to support UNT athletics.

It doesn't. This excuse is always trotted out even though the school of business dwarfs any liberal arts or art department. Also for decades people complained about greeks tailgaiting and not going into games (if they even do that anymore) but I guess that doesn't fit the narrative.

Decades of losing have sapped the program of any momentum. in 2018 vs LA Tech there didn't seem to be any problem getting a huge crowd, I wonder what happened?
