Either Jimmerson is the guy…or he’s gone.  I don’t see him sticking around to be the “special package” quarterback or being Podfenbarger’s relief.  Sorry, just the world of college football now.

I already wonder how long he's going to stay anyway.

Is he expected to challenge P-barger for the starting position?
If not, do we expect him to take the job in year 2 or would it be more likely that EM brings in another experienced QB.

Whatever we do, I don't want ANY consideration regarding lost eligibility to factor into whether he plays or not.

Edit: I posted before seeing this which is definitely good news.

Only 2 of our 22 starters from our last game against Temple are in the portal. The high school guys who Morris have signed have pretty much all stayed, except for the guys who weren’t getting any playing time.

Out of the 2023 and 2024 high school signees signed by Morris, Tyler Mercer is the only one to start and hit the portal. The other 2023 and 2024 HS Signees who have played extensively, Braydon Nelson, Brian Nelson, Evan Jackson, Landon Sides, Miles Coleman, Wyatt Young, Jaedon Langley, Taylor Starling, Quinton Hammonds have all played extensively or started as underclassmen the last two seasons and all seem pretty committed to the program.

It seems your chances of keeping a starter is far higher if that guy is someone your HC signed out of high school. It’s a stronger relationship.

Expecting a guy to come in and start at QB year 1 is an unreasonably high expectation. I know it's happened, even with us recently with Fine, but it's unreasonable to expect any true freshman QB to do that.

Question for those who know more about recruiting/HS football like @BillySee58 and @GMG24, what is the reason a guy like Jimerson would be recruited as an athlete vs Kyler Murray and Bryce Young being recruited as dual threat QBs. Those two are currently listed at 5'10" on their NFL rosters. If Jimerson is truly 5'9", does that 1 inch make that much of a difference?

Question #2, is D'Eriq King a reasonable comp for Jimerson? Is he faster? Trying to figure what kind of smaller QB he is.

How sad that due to the NIL and transfer portal, we cannot truly enjoy signing a young man who has just had an incredible season. Most assume that if he comes in and does well, he will be gone before he has even dressed out for his first practice. Sorry, but not sure how beneficial it is to recruit HS QBs anymore and spend the time developing them.

Yeah, that was pretty much my thoughts when I made my post about his chances of ever playing.  I'm not all that excited about paying for his transfer credits, nutrition program, and workout facility only to make him a better player at Okie State or wherever he ends up playing.

King was recruited as a slot receiver by everybody except for UH. Even then, to get King on the field as a true freshman (Greg Ward Jr was a 3 year starter at qb) and the beginning of his sophomore season (Before Kyle Allen and Kyle Postma underperformed) he was a slot receiver.

So similar to Jimerson's recruitment in that nobody really wanted to give either a scholarship at QB. Thanks for the insight.

After watching the highlights of the North Crowley win, my prediction is that Jimmerson will come to NT to get his QB skills fine-tuned. Then it will be off to play for Coach Prime.

Colorado just signed ESPN's #2 overall prospect in Julian Lewis at QB. If Lewis works out, how does it benefit either party for Jimerson to go sit on the bench behind a top QB prospect? They also signed one of Jimerson's teammates so clearly they aren't high on Jimerson as it is.

As long as Coach Prime is there, he will continue to recruit top 10 QBs, so that's a great point about going to most likely be a backup.

So we’re getting good at recruiting high school players when it is no longer smart to recruit high school players?

And the high school players who are staying are the ones who aren’t really that successful?

No, I’m saying it is becoming increasingly smart to recruit high school players in terms of maintaining your roster. The high school signees are the ones who are much more likely to stay despite having enough success here to be able to command P4 offers through the portal.

For example, Brian Nelson is a 6’ cornerback who had 4 picks this year. Braydon Nelson started 9 games as a true freshman including about half at left tackle. They would both have a host of P4 offers if they hit the portal, but they have chosen to stay. For guys who we bring in through the portal, if they have seasons where they could command as many P4 offers as the Nelsons could right now, they are basically locks to enter the portal. But the guys who have been here since they graduated high school have shown far more loyalty in terms of staying out of the portal when they have the stock to get P4 offers through it.

I think effective immediately, Juco will become the attractive route to take for many kids and college recruiters. Why go straight out of high school to a 4 (or 5) year university only to sit and redshirt. Go to Juco for 2 years of development, start from day 1 then take advantage of 4 additional years of eligibility at the U?

College recruiters can pickup up "ready to play" juco kids that now have 4 years of eligibility left. Obviously, the current 4-5 star high school recruit will continue to go directly to the U to take advantage of the largest NIL deals.

Anyway, just a thought

Valid point that will have to be weighed against the level of coaching and the facilities available to develop them at the juco. They will not have the same level of fitness training and access to nutrition programs. But I believe you're correct in that sum will take that route to try and develop themselves.

Yes, will definitely be more attractive than ever. Still, I think you can beat out JUCOs for the vast majority of kids as a school like North Texas. FCS and DII will have more trouble.

Either way, definitely will incentivize getting your freshmen on the field as a four-year school.

They threw that ruling out.  It is only for players who played Juco ball, and are exhausting their final year of eligibility THIS year.  Essentially gaining 1 extra year to play.  I think NCAA realized what a S*$* show they would have caused by allowing the previous ruling to remain.

Whether we recruit them out of high school or get them in the portal, the risk of a QB leaving after a strong season in Denton is the same.

At some point if our transferred-out quarterbacks keep being roster depth riding the bench, maybe a 3,000-yard passer under Eric Morris will be more reluctant to leave.

Good observation. I'd contend the sample size is too small to make general predictions but so far, it looks to be a good indicator.

I wonder if we won't see some incentives for freshmen recruits such as an additional NIL "bag" or bonus for graduating 4 years down the line as long as you never enter the portal. Spin it like once you graduate, there will be a meet and great event with donors, proceeds go to your graduation "gift" and it gives you a chance to network with people who can land you a job. Looking at regular students, there's always a scholarship pool for traditional students coming straight from HS and another pool for transfer students. The benefits and requirements aren't the same and I can see the same happening to entice freshmen to stay all 4 years. Once they get to year 3 and are well developed college players with a spot in the 2-deep, why not stay that 4th year for that additional NIL payment once you graduate. Conversely, if you're a guy struggling for PT but you're a good depth guy, why risk that final payout by entering the portal when you're pretty confident you won't get big offers elsewhere.

Too many "player-whisperers" these days telling kids what they should do next in their career.

I'd like to see more data about players that left a program for NIL/more playing time on what the return on their investment was.  If they had a do-over would they make different decisions or was it really the right move?  Do players that change schools every year really have a loyalty to any of them when their playing days are over?

I’ve wondered this, too. I know he’s small, and stats can be misleading, but a kid that threw for 58td’s to 5int’s and also ran for 6 more scores and averaged over 10 yards per rush is dismissed by EVERY p4 school as a qb prospect.  Those stats were just his sr year.  He competed and beat the ABSOLUTE BEST that Texas had to offer, and he’s still just a 3-star. Out performed Alabama recruit and overall number 2 qb in the class in the state semi-finals, but he’s just average.

I went from 6 to midnight the second I heard we flipped him, and I can’t quit grinning thinking about the potential this kid has.

in all fairness, I was the same way with Riley dodge.  So…..we’ll wait and hope because nothing is better than telling all your buddies, “I told you!!” Lol
