Truly the one matchup the college football gods could conjure that leaves me with no choice but to not watch it.  Pedophile U is impossible to root for.  Dirty cheating smu is impossible to root for.  Douchecanoe them both

Imagine traveling the same day for your team's 11am kickoff and you're already a time zone behind. Private school tuition can't buy common sense I guess.

Even the SMU fans know that it should have been Alabama in this game. Playing close against a Clemson team which didn't even deserve to be in the playoff was not a valid excuse to let SMU slip in. Alabama can slug it out with the big boys, tiny private SMU just gets embarrassed on this stage.

Penn State-SMU TV info, time, spread: Gameday Central

SMU's only victory may be their ability to deplete Penn State of fireworks.

A Big 10 vs SEC invitational College Football Playoff is of no interest to me.   This will be the 2nd time Tennessee and Ohio State have played in their history.  The Clemson vs Texas game will be their first matchup EVER.   That to me highlights the absurdity of the out of conference scheduling for the bigger brand teams.  And if Alabama went up to Penn State and got blown out exactly the same way nobody would mention it next year when they are in consideration for a wildcard spot with 2 (or maybe even 3) losses.

Look, as for SMU….they’re 30 minutes down the road. You can say “why are we talking about them” they’re in the top 12 playoff. We have to get over it. We’re college football fans. Of course SMU being in the playoff is going to be discussed.

But as for their performance….it was expected. They got super lucky with their schedule this year. Just like Indiana. If you plugged Memphis or Tulane in their spot, they would’ve done the same thing. Their QB is no better than most QBs we faced in the AAC this year. Our QB was as good as him. That’s just the truth.  so they were a really good AAC team this year that got a super lucky schedule in a bad conference. I don’t hold anything against them for that.

BUT

We can’t really discuss them for much longer because the current college landscape is set up to make them a national powerhouse. They have a good coach. He is.  And he got them in the national discussion.  And they can take that with their money and go on an unbelievable run. Their QB won’t be here next year. Of course he won’t. They’ll pay a better one.  Their NIL will dwarf every team in the ACC. I would bet their NIL will be top 10 in the country. Maybe top 5. They’ll have more $$ available than Bama. Arguably UT. What do they need? 4 star DE? 3 top OL? QB? 2 WR? There’s no cap to what they can pay.

So we have to move on from SMU. They will be in the playoff a lot. So of course we’ll talk about them because they’ll be in the playoff. But we have to get over it. Are they scum bags? Yes. Of course. They have too much money and they will win. The landscape has changed. And they will succeed because they can pay.

We have to hope we break off and do our own thing

Here’s the thing, I don’t think even you believe they would have lost the way SMU did.   Penn State won by 28, but they could have made it more…SMU was NEVER in that game competitively…and they never should have been in it at all.   They dodged the only two “decent” teams in a VERY weak ACC during the regular season and lost anytime they played a decent team.

He may go to a bigger program, but he is not leaving Colorado for University Park.

To be honest I was just referring that Smut just wasn't  ready for all the glitter and hoopla of being in the College Playoffs. I'm  with you...Deion smarter than that.

They were a bad pass/dropped pass from going up 7-0.  I think that would have changed the game considerably.

I’m not going to defend SMU because I agree that they had a very favorable ACC schedule, but they didn’t play well today and I think their inexperience on the big stage was a factor.  That shouldn’t prevent them (or any other team) from getting the opportunity.

If the seedings were done correctly, Clemson would have likely been playing Arizona St. and SMU would likely have been playing Boise St. which probably would have been more competitive games.  I don’t think Boise or ASU have quite the home field advantage that Penn St and Texas do…especially Penn St in late December.

I can’t believe how many fans of a G5 team seem to want a playoff consisting of the SEC vs the B1G.  I love what Sean McDonough said last night: We need to stop assuming the SEC and B1G are the best conferences.  Not a direct quote, but that’s the gist.

The only reason you’re saying that is bc it’s SMU. When it was UCF or Cincinnati or Boise, everyone hypes up the little guy bc they delude themselves that maybe in the right universe that could be UNT.

Truth.

I’m a fan of the underdog in March Madness and I feel the same about the CFP.  The upsets are the special moments of the tournament.

I guess Tennessee didn't deserve to be in the tournament either.  Maybe the SEC was only top heavy with Georgia and Texas.

I'm obviously being facetious. What I said earlier is true...you can't give too many hot takes or give reasonable judgements about teams being deserving or not because of one game. Sometimes blowouts happen in big games even when teams are well matched on paper.

Exactly.  Sometimes games just go south, especially when the QB play is bad as was the case for both Indiana and SMU (though the D-lines of ND and Penn St. had something to do with their bad play).
