New UNT DC Skyler Cassity will be calling the defensive plays.

SHSU defensive staff will be coming to UNT.

Perfect! I'll be glued to the TV

So far with 11 minutes left in the 2nd quarter, some observations:

Pros: aggressive pass rush, showing different looks at the LOS (pressure coming from different areas), defense flies

Cons: still a 3 man front, defense getting gashed in the run game. GA So's lead back is averaging 8.3 yards per carry. Gave up a 4th down conversion.

Cassity's defense is what I expected a 3-3-5 defense to look like. You're going to give up some yards on the ground game but you'll make up for it by regularly blitzing from different positions and swarming the secondary to cause turnovers in the passing game.

Cornerbacks are not lining up 10 yards off the line of scrimmage. They do have 2 DBs, I'm assuming safeties, lined up pretty deep though. It's those linebackers that have been making incredible interceptions.

Here's a list of the current SHSU defense entrants to the TP, along with their location on depth chart in case you want to be watching the play of any of them.

Would be nice to get a bunch of them to go along with Fields.

BTW - I wish sites would list players as to number years of eligibility remaining and not class.

Depth Num Name Pos Ht Wt Class
------ ----- ---------------- ----- ---- ---- --------
  1 6 Trey Fields LB 6-0 215 Sr
  1 19 Isaiah Cash DB 6-0 195 Gr
  1 5 David Fisher DB 6-0 185 R-Jr
  1 3 Caleb Weaver DB 5-11 190 R-Jr
  1 90 Richard Outland DL 6-3 290 R-Jr
  2 26 S'Maje Burrell LB 6-0 220 R-Fr

Briceon Hayes with Sam's 4th int.

Bring him to Denton!

Bring any of the DL guys too.  Good size.

Literally have 4 men on line of scrimmage every play. They will stand up one of the edges to be able to drop in coverage or rush on a percentage of plays. But always 4 on line of scrimmage.

Negative. Even the announcers called the 3 man multiple times.

2nd defensive play in the highlights:

3rd and 14. Obvious passing down.

maybe I misspoke and it jot 4-2-5 every play, but acting like it’s a 3-3-5 base is idiotic.

It's certainly not a 3 man base but he's not running 4 true defensive linemen either which is fine. He's got some very athletic and well-coached linebackers who do a great job at hiding where they'll be whether it be rushing or dropping into coverage. The bowl game depth chart even shows 3 DLs, 4 LBs, and 5 DBs although Hayes certainly has the size to be an end even though he's listed as a linebacker. The point of the comment was that many complained of size on the DL with the 3 man front and it doesn't appear we'll get 4 guys with DL size on the line but the individual DL on SHSU's certainly have more than enough size to make up for it.

I enjoyed watching Cassity's defense. They fly all over and create havoc. The confusion in the secondary was obvious by Ga So's mistakes in the passing game. That said, Ga So was 2/2 on 4th down and never stopped at the goal line (TD on 3rd and 1 and TD on 1st and 1). Small sample size. Just an observation.

3rd and 2. Is this also an obvious passing down? There's others, I don't feel like taking screenshot of every play with 3 on the line. Just wanted to show one in what's not an obvious passing down.

Its 3rd and 14.... Disguise coverage make QB Squeeze the ball let pass rush get there or flush him out and let spying LB tackle for minimal gain.  I don't understand how anyone is complaining about getting this DC.  Even if he ran 3-3-5 (which he doesn't 2nd or 3rd and long you might see 3 DL but majority of the time it will be 4 guys coming.  Who cares?? He led the #19 defense in the nation.  If he just takes this defense to somewhere in the 70's ranking we would have 10 wins this year and be tickled to death.  Please just enjoy something nice because if he replicates his success at SHSU he won't be at UNT long.

3rd and 2 with 28 seconds left, go 3 down make them run the ball because that is what the box is telling you to do.  They run the ball and burn a Timeout and have 24 seconds to try and score down 2 scores and they are kicking the ball off to SHSU after halftime so if they don't get a TD they're looking at a 3 score deficit.

28 seconds left in the first half back in their own end, almost to midfield.  2 timeouts.  Looks like a passing down.  It sure looks like a passing formation.

Yes I missed the time/end of half scenario in that case.

It's been said by others on the board. They use a Jack linebacker. I'm looking at size and how that affects some of those down and 1 situations we've struggled with. Is what Cassity runs enough to solve those issues? Is 3 true DL and Jack linebacker enough? Are we equating that to a true 4-man front?
