This speaks mostly of backup QBs and CFP timing.  It is equally difficult for Bowl teams and backup players that may want to stay for the Bowl, but feel they have to be in the market to get max visibility.   If it's a starter opting out...screw 'em!   It's time for binding multiple-year contracts for players!

............................................................................................

Penn State coach James Franklin defended backup quarterback Beau Pribula, who entered the transfer portal Monday and will leave the team before the College Football Playoff, saying that "we got problems in college football" and that Pribula "should not be put in this position."

Franklin said the timing of the open transfer portal, which overlaps with CFP preparation and games and creates urgency for quarterbacks to make their transfer decisions, creates an untenable situation.

I don't think it's in the best interest of the student-athlete, I don't think it's in the best interest of college football."

A lot of validity in what Franklin is saying. Tough for kids to get offers if they don’t go in portal but also tough if they want to have a chance for a national championship or big bowl game.

A strong P2 coach complaining about the portal. That is exactly what we need to see change occur.

Thinking the same. One or two more P2s complain and there will be changes

Another effect of the NIL and Portal era has been several coaches giving up Head coaching jobs.  The Wake Forest coach just resigned to take an advisors role...

"It was Clawson's decision to step down, sources told ESPN, as he felt it was time. Sources compared the decision to recent moves made by Virginia basketball coach Tony Bennett and former Washington football coach Chris Petersen, who both stepped away in part because of the changing era in their respective sports.

The headwinds of the current era of college football over the past two years at Wake Forest complicated how Clawson built teams. He'd redshirt players to have older rosters, and leaned on continuity and player development as competitive advantages. The inability to retain top talent financially, because of NIL and the transfer portal, has blunted the effectiveness of Wake Forest's edges."
