Last road game of nonconference as the ladies (7-2) travel west to play Santa Clara (5-4). The Lady Broncos posted the best record in 2023-24 of any of our nonconference opponents at 25-9 and made it to the second round of the WBIT, but now it looks like a much more winnable game as two of their five wins are against non-DI competition.

Notes/comparison:

  • Santa Clara has one scorer avergaging double digits (we have four) and that's 6'3" forward Olivia Pollerd at 17.8 PPG. She's also their most lethal deep shooting threat at 37% with a team-high 20 triples made on the season.
  • We average 69.7 PPG and Santa Clara averages 65.1. We give up 61.2 PPG and Santa Clara gives up 61.0.
  • Both teams shoot far fewer 3's than their opponents. We have shot 108 and our opponents have shot 200. Santa Clara has shot 162 and their opponents have shot 221. Our percentage is better at 32.4% compared to SC's 29.6%
  • Santa Clara has definitely been able to put together the tougher schedule. In D1 competition, our wins are against teams with a combined 22-42 record. Santa Clara's wins are against teams with a combined 17-16 record. Our losses are against teams with a combined 12-8 record. Santa Clara's losses are against teams with a combined 29-11 record.
  • We probably won't have to worry about a homecourt advantage. Santa Clara is averaging an announced attendance of 230 per game through their first four at home.

Take care of business tomorrow and we likely go into AAC play with 10 wins!

Ladies rally in the fourth to make it a respectable 63-58 final. 0-3 this year in games played west of Texas, maybe there's a reason outside of cost neither of our programs travel to the west coast often.

Looking at the statsheet (I wasn't able to watch the game), Lampkin had a game-high 25 with 8 rebounds. Only Deck (11) also had double digits. We went 3-19 from three.

Their Australian Pollerd only had 13 but two of their four long bombs. The Lady Broncos were led by their guard Hannah Rapp (also Australian) with 16.

At 7-3, we still own the second-best record in the mediocre AAC, only being 7-1 UTSA. The ladies only play UTSA on the road on Tuesday, 2/4. UTSA's women's program is on the rise, and they swept us in two meetings last year.

Last two games of nonconference are a MTE with SMU (Thursday, 12/19) and Chicago State (Saturday, 12/21) in Denton.

Was only able to watch the first half so limited observations.  Santa Clara had very precise passing and was able to get lots of easy baskets because of this and were also good at finishing at the rim.  UNT couldn't hit 3's so had difficulty getting easy shots inside like Santa Clara did.  Santa Clara definitely looked like the better team the first half.

UNT made a run the 2nd half but don't know what changed since I wasn't able to watch it.  We seem to be slow getting going early in the games though.  I hope we use this game as a basis for improving before conference play.  Santa Clara was a much better team than others we have played so far this year.

I wasn't able to watch either, but something changed in the 4th period, and we were only behind 57-59 with 30 seconds left.  We outscored them 24-16 in that final period.

Maybe they just had subs in?  If we made adjustments, it needed to happen sooner in the game.

Outside of Lampkin, NT couldn't make any shot; three or layup.

The bad thing IMO, was very poor defense around the basket.  A lot of non-defended shots around the basket, Lambert would challenge a shooter and she would just pass to a virtually unguarded player breaking to the basket.

The defense greatly improved late, and NT came close but SC was able to hit enough free throws to hang on to the lead.
