North Carolina names Bill Belichick next head coach

Does anyone else remember when Barry Switzer expressed an interest in Coaching North Texas in the early 90's?

I am in utter shock by Bill going to UNC.  We aren’t in the same financial stratosphere with UNC but it still just makes me look at our program’s move as lack luster even for the level we are at.

I think you need to research that.  I highly  doubt that was more than a made up rumor.   If this is true and I get confirmation that we didn’t try to move heaven and earth to get Barry I am really done actively supporting this program.  Maybe this connected to the time the Big 8 (Big 12 now) was considering us.  And his interest was exclusively dependent on us getting added to that conference.

But hey let’s get UNC on the schedule ASAP.  Two-for-one or a home and home, I don’t care.  I think it would be comical for a top 10 ranked undefeated UNC team led by a coach Jerry couldn’t work with making local headlines for a game in Denton.  Maybe our first sellout if we are any good. 😂

Didn’t Jim Harbaugh interview for our HC as well at one time?

Wanna jump off a building? It came down to him or Todd Dodge. I guess that's why RV is working in real estate these days or wherever he fcked off to.

This is the first I've heard of that.  Are you sure you aren't thinking about the SWC?

For sure, we dropped down to FCS when the SWC made it clear they had NO interest in adding us.  There is even a clip of a North Texas game during the period I am thinking about where the commentators are mentioning Big 8 consideration.   By the early 90s when Arkansas left it was assumed the SWC was going to die and/or jettison TCU, Baylor, Rice, Houston, SMU and add higher profile programs.  Big 8 decided to add the teams UT Austin and Texas A&M approved of.  And stories say Governor Ann Richards made sure that Baylor didn’t get left out.  Otherwise I think it is common belief that Houston would not have gotten left out.  I don’t believe even Texas Tech felt like they were completely safe from being an orphan program.  Although I welcome people familiar with Texas Tech history to correct me if I am wrong about that.

He says he wants to run UNC like a semi-NFL team, lol.

He will soon find out that 18-22 year old know-it-all college kids are a lot different than 23-35 year old men.

I'd rather this announcement was the Cowboys hiring him.

I predict massive failure. Tom Brady ain’t walking through those doors in Chapel Hill.

That personality meshing with 18-22 year olds makes me laugh. Can you see Belichick sitting at the kitchen table of some five star recruit trying to talk to his parents and relate to this kid?

It couldn't be any easier:
He shows up to that kitchen table with a fistful of SB rings, then says, "You want some of these?  Come play for me & I'll get you ready to get one."

That sounds like a graduate from the Dan McCarney school of recruiting.

lol How does he make the claim that he'll make an 18 year old a super bowl winner?

Harbaugh was considered "too costly" by Gretchen Bataille, our President at the time. He basically used us for interview experience and got the Stanford job.  RV basically realized that to keep his job, as always, he just had to stay in budget, so he hired Todd Dodge from Southlake Carroll, who brought over his coordinators from the high school to be our coordinators. The good news was that Dodge didn't cost us too much, so we fired him after he was deemed affordable to let go, as it only cost us $325k to fire him, after his spectacular 6-37 record. And thank goodness we didn't fire him after his third season, or else that $325k we saved by letting him coach again for a 4th season got us one extra win for Coach Dodge and it allowed us to have our best season since 2006, at 3-9.

RV got to keep his job as AD for another 9 years after hiring Dodge in 2007. Even though he hired the worst football coach in our history (Dodge), the worst women's basketball coach in our history (Shanice Stephens), and a men's basketball coach that absolutely destroyed a program that had been in the NCAA Tournament and had a great 5* recruit herein exactly one season (yet still got 5 years to coach). He was only let go after the 17 boosters he had fleeced for years to pay for access to our program decided that paying off the contract of Dan McCarney for over $2 million immediately following the worst loss in modern college football history on Homecoming against an FCS program in Portland State 66-7 was too much to swallow and eventually saw him leave in the spring of 2016.

No matter how frustrated anyone is with our athletic department right now, its light years better than it was back then.

Very good info you shared.  I found it very interesting.  I just wish some of the UNT forefathers had been more forward looking.  A good example would be why did no one ever call on Mattress Mack?  The guys is worth Billions and he played football at UNT!

You may not know this, but Mattress Mac gave us a million dollars for the football program back in 2006. He and Darrell Dickey were apparently close and Coach got him to donate. Well, we fired Dickey, as the program really began to fall back. That pissed off Mattress Mac, so he agreed to only let the money go if we named the practice fields after Darrell Dickey, a coach who went 42-64. After this, he has never shown even a hint of interest in our athletic program ever again.

I suspect that he will never give another cent to our program.

He's blown the rest of his money on coke and bad Astros bets.

It's been a while, but I believe Mattress Mac had been giving money to the program for a few years before he ever gave the million for the practice fields.

And, IIRC, MM had already been falling out with RV and the athletic department in general.

He's not the only big money donor our athletic department has dropped the ball on.

Lol.   Dan McCarney =/= Bill Belichick.   That's funny.
Also, Dan McCarney was a positions coach at FL.    Bill Belichick was the HC of the greatest NFL Dynasty of all time.
It's not anywhere near the same.

The dudes who are 4* & 5* are convinced in their own minds that they are already on their way there.  They're constantly told it's their destiny by everyone in their ears.
"Who better to get me ready than a guy who has the most ever?"

And for those thinking NIL will have something to say about it...   NIL stuff at UNC will take care of itself with this hire.   Look at Colorado's NIL after Deion took over.

Now, how does Belichick deal with these kids & their fragility when adversity hits?   That is yet to be seen.

They want a coach who will get them there, and Belichek has no argument after being in the NFL for 40 years. Certainly not better than Dabo or Sark or even Ryan Day.

Yes.   The END GOAL for these kids (remember, the quote I replied to was regarding the 5* kids).    He was there.
Look at what Harbaugh was able to do at Michigan.   Harbaugh took over a 5-7 team after his 49ers tenure, and brought in quite a few 4&5*s immediately.
