The fence doesn't have a gate though, it has the illusion of a gate.   And that illusion is kept around for two reasons:

1) Most importantly to the "elites", it keeps programs like North Texas (and their fans) believing that "if we just do this or that and get things to break right, we could actually compete for a championship."   It's why you hear asinine things from G5 coaches like "our end of year goal, a national championship, is what we strive for."   Every team in G5 is the nerd that is told that, if they play their cards right, they might get invited to the prom queen's post-prom party...because maybe, just maybe, she'll finally admit she's loved us all along.  🙄

2) If you pretend your system has a way for the little guys to compete for a championship, you hamstring the most glaring anti-trust arguments.  "Your honor, we haven't built a monopoly in college football, just look at Boise that we let play in the first round of the playoff"

What happens to this argument if Jeanty happens to go off in the Fiesta Bowl & beyond, and Boise St. does the improbable to win a Natty?
Boise St. is not a "big boy", and they certainly weren't "let in".  They earned it (hence the 1st round bye, and not just the obligatory #12 seed).
The gate is there.   Tough to find, sure!   ...but it's there.

They were the 9 seed and they were “let in” to the first round bye because of the conference champion rule that I can almost guarantee they will change after this year.

It has to correct itself.  They don't want to discourage all of the college football fans to the point they don't care about the sport anymore.  I have a feeling they will ultimately start to reign in some of this insanity but it will take some of us refusing to pay for tickets and support the program via bowl attendance etc.  Always follow the money.

I disagree, only because at the universities that anybody cares about, there's always going to be a large fan base.

I haven't followed the NFL in nearly 20 years, but my understanding is that the Cowboys have been sucking most of that time but yet the stadium is still mostly full every game.  Again, it's only what I've heard, so correct me if I'm wrong, but I have heard similar statements made on the Ticket on the rare times I've listened to it lately.

Until they show any type of above-average skill and leave?  The wash and rinse/ reload shit is getting annoying... I barely learned this year's rosters (both FB and BB) and expect that they will all be gone at the EOY.

There are a couple of reasons I stopped watching the NBA in the 90s and this is one of them.

With my abysmal memory of 2024, I can still name half of the players on several teams from the 80s-early90s (Celtics, Lakers, Mavs, Bulls, Pistons...)

The market HAS adjusted. And it’s gotten us here.

Wait until the numbers from the playoff come out. ESPN and the big schools will be rolling in the $$$$$$$$$

And I can promise you they don’t care about the other 100 schools’ fans losing interest.

And that's why everyone below that line needs to stop fighting it and let them have their little members only club. They are going to get their way so go on the offensive and push them away while you still have the little power you have left. Create player contracts with buyout clauses. Create a system of promotion/relegation amongst yourselves. Regionalize your divisions to bring back what college football used to be and why people fell in love with it. If the SEC/Big10 wants to be NFL-lite, fine. Go away and let us have our fun.

I want this to happen, but I want them to have ABSOLUTELY NO association with the universities.

I realize that's a pipe dream, but I don't want universities owning minor league football teams or other businesses

Maybe UH could open an oil refinery?  Call it Cougar Oil and Gas.

Maybe Congress should do their typical sports meddling and force the Big4 Meat Packing Monopoly to break up and allow Wyoming to open a meat packing plant staffed by university students.

UNLV could open a few casinos.

USC and the SEC schools could partner up with Hooters.

Aw, hell, let's just pay all the players $100k/yr with tax money and take NIL completely out of the picture and go back to 4 year commitments.  It's only gov't money, we can easily print more.  (Actually, this stupid idea might be the best solution anyway.)

Now, excuse me while I wait for the sun to come up so I can yell at some clouds.
