I feel totally fine.  They showed last year they can identify and bring in talent.  I have heard we have quite a bit (NOT a ton compared to the top of the conference) but more than we've had in the past to help land some talent out of the portal.  DT got benched last game for a freshman who showed he was equally capable.  Mercer wasnt going to play this year until we had injuries.  I think Mercer is a year maybe 2 away from being ready for that kind of ball.  Morris won't win the job at OSU, he didnt make it through this season healthy at little ole UNT.  I get chasing a bag of $$ but we were willing to throw pretty much kitchen sink and he chose the P4.

Hard to be loyal to this team with the constant revolving door of players. I do think Morris will get another solid QB and WR in here. Hopefully we can get a transfer or JUCO OL that can play C/G. Sucks to lose people but that's the current landscape of college football.

NIL is killing College Football.  NFL not the same as it once was either.  Politics, money, no affiliation, no allegiance.   Now College = cheer for the helmet, logo, school name.   Players come and go.  My interest is dying off and I am a sports fanatic.

Every stadium in America has pictures of past players, hall of fame.   Will that die?  why would I vote for a kid that played at multiple schools for my HOF class?  I love watching Morris play QB.  but will I follow him to another school .. Nope.   Do you think Oklahoma or TCU cares what he is doing at NT ?

Kids used to get a college education, school for free, play sports, maybe find a future job.  Now its all about the dollar.  Why would I follow that behavior ?  Why would I buy a jersey with a name on it ?  I followed Peagram, Kassel, Cobbs, Mason Fine, Dunbar, Darden, Guyton, etc. ... because they played for our school .. not because they came for a year and left.

It's a shame but I dont blame them .. Money isnt everything but its tough to live without it.  System Sucks.

I think this is a fantastic post, but I’m going to somewhat disagree with the first sentence.  I think the transfer portal is the #1 killer with NIL #2.  If a player only got 1 transfer (maybe 2), there would be much more stability regardless of NIL.

NIL needs to move into the college for tax deductions purposes.

I have no problem with donations to a university being tax deductible, but money to pay for play should never be tax deductible

Great post.  I am saddened by all of these developments and I know many more that are as well.

If we are stuck with NIL and portal, I think portal shouldn't open up until after bowl season.

GMG

They have to open it up early enough for transfers to enroll so they can take part in spring drills. They would have to move up the bowl season and that would probably mean starting the football season a week or two earlier or cutting back to 10-11 games.

If you are able, please consider setting up a recurring membership with the Light The Tower NIL. You can contribute as low as $10/month. Treat it as a Netflix membership to North Texas athletics. Our advantage is with our number of alumni. You don't have pledge a lot. But $10 here and there adds up.

I don't blame you if you don't and will not give to NIL. Totally understand both sides of the argument. And I'm not saying your $10 would keep the next star QB around, but can it make the difference in keeping other players? Absolutely.

$10.00 all at once???? Really??? Go home to mommy and when you have a real job give me a call…

Everyone has their own situations. Please don't give if you have needs elsewhere. BUT if you can and want to dip your toes in, $10/month is easy to stomach.

100% agree.  Players should be allowed one "free" transfer, i.e. they get to transfer one time without having to sit out a season.  Any transfer after that and they have to sit out a season like the days of old.  It's not the money that is necessarily killing college athletics, it's the constant revolving door of players.  Just as @Rock said, it's hard to support a program made of players who only care about their stock and could give a damn about the program or our university.

One free transfer seems reasonable to me.

To help curb the movement of players (legally), I think the NCAA should consider the elimination of "Redshirting" altogether.  Change dictates that schools shouldn't feel a need to invest/develop players over a 4-5 year period anymore. This could force kids to hang around longer, realizing they aren't/weren't physically developed their first year. Additionally, having one less year of class credits toward a degree. Schools would also benefit financially by not having to fund their education over 5 years. Redshirting should not be an option anymore when healthy kids only play in 4 games. The reality is more and more kids aren't sticking around beyond 2-3 years.

I understand the top desirable players seeking a bigger challenge, greater notoriety and/or more money. Other marginal guys seem to be entering the portal because of ego; a sense of wanting to be courted all over again.

Unfortunately for many, scholarships are limited versus the growing number of entrants. Many often end up at a similar or smaller level program; if at all.

All bowl games outside of the playoffs could be played two weeks after conference championship games, and then the portal could be opened. Chances are players on teams in the playoffs are less likely to be entering the portal with impact players. Better yet, get rid of several of the games and allow teams who win six games and do not go to a bowl to have an extra week of practice in the spring and perhaps a week early starting in the fall.

One free transfer after 2 years (this protects both the players and coaches since we see a lot of "encouraging" by coaching staffs these days) and an additional transfer if your head coach gets fired. I really think we're *right* there to a pretty good system but can sometimes feel hopeless for schools like ours when the pendulum swings are drastically as it did.

14 UNT players in the portal as of now

But I thought this team grinded to get to a bowl game and then the players disappear...

The majority are players that didn’t play much. The exceptions are the all conference players…which sucks.

Ya I get that, but we make it out that these bowls games are important for the players. I feel bad for guys like Rod and Ridge who gave it everything they have here. And now we have guys bailing out….what type of teammate is that ?

That part sucks.  Seems like a few senior players families were upset on Twitter last night.  I don’t blame them.  It’s next man up, though.  I’ll be there supporting the squad.
