Yes, NIU got a short attendance bump from beating ND, much like we did in 2018.  But neither could sustain the winning and the marginal fans went away again.

In 2018 UNT beat $mut and Arkansas to start the season.   4-0 and facing La Tech at home we drew 30K fans to Apogee, for really a no-name opponent to most students.  Constant winning is the answer, with the help of some name-brand wins.

I think you're really downplaying what 18k at multiple NIU games represents. Dekalb Illinois has a population of about 40k and the county has a population of about 100k. NIU itself has an undergrad population of 11k and a total student population of about 15k. Dekalb is a town with 1 high school with an enrollment of about 2k. Denton and Denton county dwarf Dekalb and Dekalb County in all of those numbers. Home attendance of 18k over there means half the town is at the game. They could have every student at a game and not reach those numbers. You really are downplaying the impact that one Notre Dame win had on their attendance but yes, they needed to keep winning to keep it up like any team out there. I'm just pointing out we need marquee wins to start winning over the apathetic fan. More importantly, we need those marquee wins to make graduates proud to represent UNT in the fall. I've got buddies who applaud my loyalty for going to UNT games. Almost like they can't believe I waste my time driving 3 to 4 hours round trip to watch my school play.

Friends think I’m an idiot for tuning in to (for example) UNT vs Memphis when I could be watching UT vs Georgia.

I’ve been told many times that they have zero interest in being a FedEx-like sponsor of UNT sports, that they don’t want to make Dentonites feel like they’re choosing to support UNT more than TWU and that they know most Dentonites don’t care for our athletic programs. That’s straight from Chamber of Commerce members, past and present.

Denton is the single worst place for a college football team to exist.

When I was a student, a pretty good amount of TWU girls used to come to UNT football games.  They all pretty well saw our football team as their football team.  I am skeptical that a large percentage of the TWU student body or alumnae would be remotely bothered by a Denton business wholeheartedly supporting UNT football.

I also sometimes think I'm an idiot for watching UNT games considering the great games being played around the country.

Haha.  When I posted, I almost said that “my friends rightfully think I’m an idiot.”

Exactly. It was the same when I was in school. This is just an easy out for these companies.

This doesn't' add up, even if this was legitimately said/sourced.

TWU doesn't compete for football money.  And, seriously, how much weight do they carry that PACAR is afraid to lose them?  Lastly, by accounts in this thread, some believe TWU would embrace Mean Green success.

This story you told doesn't explain things at all, just raises more questions and flags.  Just reads like a bunch of CoC old heads that are making a bad business call based on bad judgement.

Not downplaying anything.  NIU had two crowds at 18K, one at 12k, one at 6K and one at 5K after the ND win.

Denton to downtown Dallas is 40 miles.   Dekalb to downtown Chicago is 60 miles.

City population is irrelevant.

Dekalb population = 40K

Starkville, MS = 25K (Miss St)

Oxford, MS = 27K (Ole MS)

Clemson, SC = 17K

Screw TWU. I could not care less if we piss off their whiny alumni. What are there 100 or so in Denton? They garner zero attention, zero media coverage, etc.

I am sure upset TWU alumni are going to negatively affect PACCAR’s bottom line. So many are purchasing their products.

Glass house, my friend.

UTexas t-shirts are available at any grocery store and Cracker Barrel in Denton.   Just sayin' UNT has a bigger fight with it's own city in it's own backyard, and always has!
