This will be an issue for him. He is injury prone! No P5 will bank on that.

The QB at Texas State is graduating and he may want to end his career playing for his father.

Makes sense why Rice said screw it and adopted the triple option.

Yeah I mean, I'm not saying it has to be that extreme of a shift but a primarily running QB probably won't attract the P4 offers anyways. It doesn't really suit what most P4s are running these days. 2013 Auburn showed you can compete at high level today running a version of triple option football coupled with tempo. They had over 700 rush attempts and less than 300 pass attempts that year.

It is really pretty forward thinking and obvious. Good running backs are everywhere. And it is WAY easier to run block than to pass block. Run blocking offensive linemen are also inexpensive to acquire.
We can’t win competing for the same players as schools with 50x our NIL budget. Let’s change the game. It is really the only way to win right now.

I don't understand the shots being taken at Mestemaker because he is a walk-on.  Didn't Georgia recently win back-to-back national titles with a walk-on QB.  And for me, walk-ons are the perfect antidote to all these "me-me-me" NIL whores.

He’s a walk-on who didn’t even start in high school. (Don’t care who was playing in front of him). Maybe it will be an incredible story?

I can’t think of many worse ways to spend finite resources.

I’m sure the OP was directly referring to us but don’t you think FAU or Tulsa would have paid $500K for a 6-6 record?   That’s a great ROI, no?

And regarding us, did that $500K (or whatever) keep us at 6-6, would we have been worse or could we have done it without CM?    I don’t know the answer to that and if you ask 3 people you’d probably get 3 different answers.

I’m not saying don’t spend $500K. I just wouldn’t spend it all on one injury-prone QB. I can’t imagine that our entire NIL budget is much more than $500K. I might spread that out a little more, especially for multiple potential playmakers on defense.

Come on man, it is high time we quit with the "pretend" football NIL crap.  We don't have a football NIL.  It is that simple.  We have an group  of Houston alumni that is trying to make money off of us by pretending to be a real NIL.  If these guys had raised anything of significance we would have surely heard it by now.  They have 6-7 teams including Southwest Texas State they do this crap for.  What a joke.  I refuse to acknowledge we have a football NIL anymore.

Yeah, I am not sure how much NIL money we have and was surprised someone said $500K. Seems high to me. Based on our inability to retain any player of consequence, I would guess it is much less than that.
If I was Eric Morris, I would be funneling atleast half of my salary into the NIL collective. The stuff I read says he can do that. If he can, maybe he could win here and then make real money in the P4 and not have to do that anymore.

You drop down, your best players will still get plucked year after year.  They can provide the funds you can not.

Sure it can happen but doesn’t seem to at the rate it’s happening at the G5 and FCS players are more easily replaced I would think?

You are not wrong on this. You don't need one player with a big check, you need lots of players with smaller checks. Linemen, linebackers, etc.

I believe he thought Earl would be the backup after he gave him the opportunity to come back after he quit and then asked to come back. But I agree he should have found someone with college experience over the summer.

What about Tisdale? Looks like he spent time at Ol Miss and TCU…?

Because the whole system is flat ridiculous. Why should the fans have to directly fund “NIL” ie player salaries? These Universities- UNT included - have $600M+ a year annual budgets. Make the schools pay for all of this shit that literally no fans of any school asked for. Cut down the ridiculous coaching salaries and administrative bloat and pay the players with that.  The system needs to be changed fundamentally, not ratcheting up pressure on schools fanbases to be complicit in this nonsense.

There is no transparency in the NIL world. Just put $$$ in a pool and hope the Collective Leadership are effective sales people and good stewards of those funds? No thanks!

UNT would be better off if we could just flat pay players out of the University’s annual budget. It’s now a University Marketing expense. Problem solved for UNT and every other school out there.

Why do you think NT has money in the budget to increase NIL?  If you are not aware, most of NT funds come from student fees, it is certainly not profits from athletics.

Students are funding the vast majority of money to compete in sports.  So you are advocating that students, most that never go to a NT athletic event, willingly give more money to athletes.  Press it and someone will call for the recall of student funding for a foundering athletic program.

NTSU did this in 1982 and subsequently never won a single playoff game or conference title their entire time at that level.  This program squandered what Odus Mitchell built.

WRONG!  Two conference championships.

True, we blew every playoff opportunity, though most games were close.  At least there was excitement in the air after each season…unlike now.

But along the way we had some helacious, competitive seasons, including the most famous where we were the #1 ranked team for 7 weeks in ‘88 and beating T Tech, Rice and getting robbed by tU in Austin. We had other seasons where we beat K State, TCU, New Mexico, New Mexico St,  Arkansas St and SMU.  And we had a lot more positive press in the metroplex than any time we’ve had the past 10 years outside of the Arkansas win.

Good to read some of our folks here  are finally waking TFU!

Its time for the G5 to band together and leave the NCAA to reform a new collegiate alliance or for North Texas to drop down to FCS with a plan to dominate it?

Rick

This -- except wouldn't court precedence on NIL still apply?  And I'd be concerned that the wild west portal system would eventually dog a new alliance.

I stand corrected but I don’t count “co-championships”.   But, I lived in Denton and I don’t remember any significant press coverage.   Great we won exactly one conference championship out right our last year at that level with 7 wins.  Inspiring 🙄😂

The US Court System stripped the NCAA of any/all power they ever had, and will continue to do so.
I'm struggling to see how a "new collegiate alliance" will somehow be immune from those same court rulings, and escape all of the same problems?
The only thing we'd be doing in that scenario is voluntarily removing ourselves from the official "collegiate alliance", and placing ourselves in the loser bracket.

There are some really stupid-rich people out there.    Just so much money that 100k is "spending cash" like you or me going to Home Depot for a new pneumatic tool or something.   Unfortunately, UNT doesn't have very many of those guys, and the ones we do have are already contributing quite a bit.
