Is it our job to name candidates? Can a fan not see that 2 or his 3 years as a DC yielded bad results and question the hire?

Relax Francis.  It was just a question.

K.C. Keeler had a lot of praise for Cassity when he hired him, and compared him to another young, promising defensive mind that he hired back in 2014... Current HC at Oregon, Dan Lanning. I'd say that being compared to the HC of the #1 team in the country is a pretty good sign that Cassity is on the right track

Short yardage situations, to me, were a result of the system and the lack of lining up under center.

Leftwich had to work with:

* No Gabe Blair

* Leke Asenuga up and leaving after ten games.

* Jett Duncan being injured

* Jasper Lott leaving the team.

* A true freshman playing a majority of the games at starting center and another starting at guard.

* Peterson playing with an injured shoulder.

I think considering the above and our offensive production, Leftwich did well.

We struggled with short yardage because we're undersized and get pushed off the ball. A lot of our offense is schemed around the lack of a good offensive line. And the offensive line is the biggest reason the SFA game was so close. They flat out dominated us.

Maybe Leftwich is a good coach. I just didn't see much this year proving that.

Like the Cowboys we don’t have a running back!

Good, but I’ll add this:  If Morris doesn’t change his mindset concerning his offensive play calling and in-game management decisions it won’t matter if we hired Buddy Ryan, Chuck Knoll or Tom Landry as our DC.  A defense cannot succeed if short-yardage and scoring opportunities are continually squandered away as if they were government food stamps.

Rick

Completely agree. We’ve got to be more complimentary on both sides of the ball to play at a championship level.

I do like the DC hire though.

Now - do we have any news about a new special teams coach? That phase of the game was also disastrous for us throughout the season and contributed mightily to several losses.

What in that response indicates any level of agitation?

I'm just saying that if you connect dots, this hire should be an upgrade.  Not a guarantee that it will be.

As you know, Morris' seat is getting warm.  I'm not sure there were a ton of quality DC's knocking on UNT's door...
However, when you have a dude with DC experience, in Texas, with some success, looking to land somewhere not named Temple, it would seem maybe a good (or at least decent) opportunity landed in our lap.

Being an upgrade shouldn't be hard considering this year's ranking. I just hoped we'd set our sights a little higher. Somebody who's been around a bit to provide some stability to our group of young coaches.

Considering another 6-6 season probably gets Morris canned, this hire really surprises me. The defense HAS to get turned around next year. I figured we'd hire someone with more experience and skins on the wall. This guy might be a genius, but does he have the pull to put together a good staff, and recruiting experience to sign quality players?

This is the hire I would have expected when Morris was first brought on. Shocked its the route he's taking after his first hire completely blew up in his face.

Very sensible questions.  The negative reactions to your post are kind of ridiculous.  🤷🏽‍♂️

I don't remember the last time I was really concerned about our running back room. Coach Cobbs has always done a great job with that group and I feel like this year was no exception. Maybe I just have an affinity towards Coach Cobbs, but I feel like any perceived "lack of production" is more indicative of the play-calling or the offensive line, not really our running backs.

Agree and disagree, losing the top 4 or 5 rbs has to be very concerning; however Porter and McGill were great when they got the opportunity.

We are starting a wide receiver ??? With four injured RB's. Seem like we always have stud running backs and Im sure we will next year.

Those guys have to have a reciprocal interest in us though.  That's the problem.

You said we have no running backs, but we do (regardless of what other positions they've played) and they're playing pretty well. You originally replied to a message about struggling in short yardage situations, which in my opinion says more about our line and the play-calling than it does our running backs. Would it be nice if our strength and conditioning were better? Absolutely, but Coach Cobbs has clearly shown that he can work with whoever we have available which makes me not concerned at all about that group.

He friggin McGuyver'd that RB room into producing despite losing his top 3 or 4 guys to injury.   Incredible job.   Probably his best year yet considering the circumstances.

Fair. Hope it works or we'll be having this conversation again next year but for head coach.

On the plus side, this hire has more DC experience than Craponi even after he has this job a couple years and was fired. On the negative side, still would have liked someone with more skins on the wall. I am fairly underwhelmed by this hire. Would be difficult to get worse (although technically possible! It is NT football!) so trying to think positively that we made a change and perhaps a better game plan and in game adjustments happen.
Unfortunately, unless Morris fires himself as OC then this guy likely fails also.

I honestly don't believe that's a problem with what we're able to provide financially. My opinion, which could be wrong, is that Morris still does not have the coaching maturity and self-confidence to surround himself with people who have a lot of experience and might not blindly follow his philosophies.
