I want the DC from Army. He takes what are probably 3 star or below recruits and has the 9th ranked defense in the NCAA.

He makes more than Caponi and how much of that is due to dominating the clock? Being ranked 1st in time of possession does wonders for your defense. I think he's too expensive for what he's proven. When he was the DC at Georgia Tech in 2018, they were 79th in scoring defense and allowed 49 to a USF team that finished 7-6.

It helps to have the incredible discipline mindset required at WP.  Having an option offense on the other side of the ball ain't hurting either.

Not a deal breaker.  Just offering some perspective.

If we were 64th in scoring defense, we would likely be 10-2 at worst.

That was actually for 2017. I looked at the wrong year... they were 79th for 2018-2019 calendar year. Middle of the pack in the ACC.

He makes more than Caponi which I don't like unless we plan on holding on to the ball for 35 minutes per game like Army did this year.

Not to disagree, but I thought it had been reported Caponi was the highest-paid G5 coordinator.

Now if you want to argue the pay difference is insignificant, I'm not going to disagree but Nate Woody makes 480k as it is. He's not coming here and starting over for the same pay so how much more would we be willing to pay to bring him over? Then you have to consider he wouldn't be bringing any of his guys with him, or at least not very many since they'd have to get out of their service so it really would be a complete rebuild. I think hiring him would be an expensive failure for those reasons.

Without knowing what JD knows, I'd be interested in Sammy Lawanson. He's the Co-DC and outside linebackers coach at Bowling Green. Ranked 29th in total defense and 24th in scoring defense, I don't believe anybody scored more than 34 against them which was to Penn State on the road and also includes holding Texas A&M to 26 on the road. He previously coached at Tulsa and for those interested in Texas ties he was the defensive coordinator at Hillcrest (04-05) in Dallas, John Horn (07-11) in Mesquite, and Haltom City (06). That leads me to my fun fact:

If I'm counting correctly, Lawanson would have been the DC at Haltom HS when Lance Dunbar was a junior there.

On paper that sounds like a home run hire.

Can we at least get a DC that has been a DC at the FBS level? Is that too much to ask?

That would be ideal but at least an experienced FCS DC. Bringing in a guy with almost no coordinating experience and paying him that much was completely asinine.

We could probably money whip just about any MAC or Sun Belt DC. Regarding the guy I posted, he was also DC at Sac State for 3 years. He's got decent experience and Texas ties. I also don't think we'd have to pay Caponi salary to get him here.

Per the internet

North Texas is expected to hire Sam Houston’s Skyler Cassity as its new defensive coordinator, a source tells @CBSSports/@247Sports.

Led the way as Sam Houston ranked No. 1 in Conference USA in scoring defense and was key in the team improving from 3-9 last year to 9-3 this year

I think that should be the strategy going forward. Either a big name for HC, or a solid coach/coordinator from one of the SBC, CUSA, or MAC. Right now I'd take that coach from App St. for Morris in a heartbeat.
