Lashlee isn’t going anywhere ever if SMU doesn’t want him to.

SMU can spend with anyone. Only reason Dykes left was to coach in the P4.

The ACC F’d up admitting SMU and it is hilarious that SMU is letting them keep their money but is taking their trophy. I can’t stand SMU, but I am impressed with how they have expertly maneuvered this situation.

The current era of college athletics with unlimited NIL is perfect for SMU. Better make hay while the sun is shining because once there are caps on spending, the Ponies will be sent back to the barn.

And the biggest key is administrative support, which UNT clearly lacks.  Our Board of Trustees has aligned the university to pursue athletics to support the academic mission of the school and we're all pulling the same direction.

“academic mission of the school”. Lol

You think NIL player$ care anything about academics?

If you honestly think what happened to SMU was in any way fair treatment given what other programs were doing at the time (or what has happened in the subsequent 35 plus years since) then are you divorced from reality.  SMU was made an example of and it did absolutely nothing to curtail paying players or offering inducements to high school recruits.  Nothing.  The NCAA has long since acknowledged had they known the fallout from SMU that the death penalty would've never been on the table.

It took all of one year playing in a power conference to see SMU's potential now that the administration, boosters, and athletic department are all in alignment.

I personally am amazed at what SMU has accomplished this year and give them all the credit in the world. I thought they would be a door mat in the ACC instead of a top 10 program. Congrats! Also the past is in the past and its time to move on regarding  their death sentence. However if you ever get a copy of "A Payroll To Meet " it really makes for interesting reading.

This doesn’t seem apparent to our university up to now.

NIL alone doesn’t win.  I honestly don’t know much about his coaching, but I have to think he’s pretty good.  Benching your returning starter QB in favor of a redshirt freshman was a bold move, but it proved to be the correct one.

Maybe Gus got wind that FSU is close to one of the top tier leagues. Lashlee doesn’t strike me like that and I think he hangs out unless a top 2 league member calls. Anyone with the ego of a coach is going to want to land there. Even a tame Lashlee will want to be tested at the best. Perhaps when Tulane and Memphis or South Florida come in as replacements he bolts. SMU is in good shape despite few programs thrilled about sharing a league with them.

wow. imagine being a billionaire. enough money to help eradicate world hunger and/or own your own sex island...yet instead, here they are, investing in SMU Football.

This is almost exactly how I felt watching the Aggies decide that $78 million would be better spent on making sure Jimbo Fisher left town than to use those funds to actually help humanity.

Lol no.  They are here to play football not school.  But the school enjoys being connected with Stanford, Cal, Duke, Wake,  Virginia, etc.  And the >50% increase in applications we've gotten this year.

If he ever beats a real team, like Top 10 type team, he may get some looks from a P2 dweller Private school like a Vanderbilt or Northwestern.

Yes, the visibility with football success is good for drawing "real students" to the academics.  I think TCU got like a 200% increase in applications after the National Championship appearance.

The football players, however, I doubt really care about the academic standards.

I have never heard of or seen anything that suggested that  “the NCAA has long since acknowledged had they known the fallout from SMU that the death penalty would’ve never been on the table.”

Please cite this reference.

And why do ponyfans and cougarfans continue to monitor GOMEANGREEN.COM ?

TCU is academic trash.  Four year country club where rich Yankees can cosplay as ranch hands.

SMU got the death penalty because they were incredibly stupid back then.

When the NCAA announced new cheating rules in 1985 that included the death penalty as the most severe potential punishment, SMU responded by phasing out payments to players instead of ending them immediately. At least one of those players got kicked off the team and spilled the beans in a TV interview.

Now SMU thinks it deserves revenge because it was told not to piss on an electrified fence and did it anyway.

Mustang nation would be smarter to leave the past in the past and enjoy the run they're on.

Nope.  Embrace that entire era.  We were willing to take care of our players financially and paid the ultimate price to do it.  Now?  Everyone's doing it.  We have a billionaire class that has tasted some success and now can't get enough of it.

SMU is going to consistently be a Top 4 team in the ACC.

RL's extension puts him north of $6m a year through 2031.  He's not going anywhere unless its a true blue blood (top 10-12 programs in the country from a prestige perspective).

Above poster is correct.  Its about money.  The billionaire lot finally has a taste of success and now the floodgates are officially open.  Basketball has a Top 10 recruiting class.  Football on the cusp of a CFP run.  School if fully committed to winning at the highest level.  The sleeping giant is wide awake and ready to seek vengeance on the most egregious and unfair penalty ever handed down to a college program.  40 years worth of revenge about to be unleashed.

Even though he’s being a sickening troll coming here and bragging over smu’s pathetic excess that will surely hasten the demise of what is left of college athletics,….everyone needs to read this post above carefully and let it sink in real deep because he’s telling us all the truth.  And unless something drastic changes, and soon, anyone at North Texas who still supports this NIL bullshit and somehow thinks we, or any other G5, and some P4’s are going to ever compete in this insane environment need to have their head examined.

Do I need to go into another rant about how we didn't start our endowment fund until 1974 or 75. It was AGAINST OUR CULTURE TO RAISE OUTSIDE MONIES.  When we finally caught on, we were 84 years behind just about everyone else. BUT most of the administrators still didn't want North Texas to change.

Around the time that "Jitter Nolan" and Hayden Fry arrived we were the complete opposite of SMU. They loved their money, and we loved our bureaucracy. And that is mostly still true today.

SMU resents that they were punished for what just about all the other SWC schools were doing. And that is somewhat valid. But my assessment of what went down starts with the fact that everyone dislikes and/or hates SMU and it culminated with their ham handed, and arrogant, system of paying players.

SO, once again, SMU was treated unfairly, but they pretty much brought it on themselves. Just about everyone hated you then.......and pretty much still does.

They weren't treated unfairly.  They were warned numerous times and they thumbed their nose at the NCAA basically from the Governor's office.  Go Russia State!

I had mentioned something along these lines. I believe an answer may be a PE buyout then a salary cap. It is not within reason to believe the G5’s have value.

You make cheating sound so considerate.

As for SMU remaining near the top of the ACC in the future, you might take a look at how things are going in Tallahassee just 12 months after FSU went undefeated. The portal giveth, the portal taketh away.
