How good a coach is Laslee? Could he get hired away or do you credit SMU success more to the NIL. Is the NIL now the most important component in college football? I would say yes it is with coaching 2nd and facilities 3rd?

I would say NIL is 2nd or 3rd depending on how you break apart staff responsibilities. I'd say on field coaching is 1, talent evaluation/scouting is 2 (I work with a guy who did HS scouting for Alabama and this goes beyond the coaches), NIL is 3, facilities is 4.

You could give Eric Morris and Caponi unlimited NIL funds and we would not be in the conference championship game. Michigan, Florida State, USC, and others show it's not as simple as buying players.

SMU has one thing going for them, they can buy their way to success.

This is true in football and life; take away the money and they’re just the betas we all know they are.

RL's extension puts him north of $6m a year through 2031.  He's not going anywhere unless its a true blue blood (top 10-12 programs in the country from a prestige perspective).

Above poster is correct.  Its about money.  The billionaire lot finally has a taste of success and now the floodgates are officially open.  Basketball has a Top 10 recruiting class.  Football on the cusp of a CFP run.  School if fully committed to winning at the highest level.  The sleeping giant is wide awake and ready to seek vengeance on the most egregious and unfair penalty ever handed down to a college program.  40 years worth of revenge about to be unleashed.

🤣🤣🤣🤣.  Hypocritical yes.  Unfair?  Because y'all were stupid enough to get caught repeatedly?  Give me a break.  Without the Penn State scandal this opinion had no basis in the reality of what happened to SMU.

I will give y'all credit for trying.  But again this thread being posted here is part of the big reason we are a Joke Program and NOT SMU's rival.  I have never been more disgusted with our Program and we are waxing poetic about SMU while UTSA laps us. 🙄

If you honestly think what happened to SMU was in any way fair treatment given what other programs were doing at the time (or what has happened in the subsequent 35 plus years since) then are you divorced from reality.  SMU was made an example of and it did absolutely nothing to curtail paying players or offering inducements to high school recruits.  Nothing.  The NCAA has long since acknowledged had they known the fallout from SMU that the death penalty would've never been on the table.

It took all of one year playing in a power conference to see SMU's potential now that the administration, boosters, and athletic department are all in alignment.

Keep telling yourself that when you're watching the Frisco Bowl and SMU is playing Notre Dame in the Peach Bowl.  Money talks Copium Commando.

He ain't wrong though. Now that you can rent a team every year, the wealthier schools will be able to purchase their CFP spots. I just want to watch good football with some parity. Not someone who's hanging out for a bigger paycheck each year. It's just not fun college sports.

SMU knows their strengths and plays to them. Kudos to them. No different in the private sector- you gotta pay for talent, who otherwise wouldn't go to your company.

They paid players sure, but Dykes slowly established a recruiting infrastructure that Lashlee expanded. Decent coaching matters too.

We haven't beaten SMU since 2018- and the games haven't been close. I'd love for us to even have 1/10 of the infrastructure SMU does.

This is the scariest part for UNT but on a G5 level. Can we even afford to be a competitive mid major in football?

Yes.  UNT can be an upper tier G5 program.  Very few G5's have the combination of location, resources, etc.

From all indications, however, there is not an institutional or administrative desire to win at a high level.  Until that happens it'll be Frisco Bowl levels of success.

SMU, the quintessentially legendary harbinger of college athletics nouveau riche, has proven once again the painful truth of the old axiom, "Money Talks". The realization that humans care so little for attributes such as depth of qualitative character yet care so much for "Slam bang thank you ma'am" sports is so tellingly embarrassing. I reckon it's where we are and that is that...proof being that we're even spending time away from family or whatever discussing it on this board.

We absolutely can.  But the stupidity and low aspirational moves the Athletic Department has made while upstart programs who just started playing FBS after we got back to up to FBS has ran off most high donors.  This program had to win over 300k local alumni.  You don't do that by hiring guys like Dodge, Littrel, or Morris.  Mac was the best PR hire but it seems like that is all they thought of when they hired him.   They rewarded mediocrity with Seth.  And we saw the result this last home game.

Fact is for its size location the University of North Texas has put one of the most underachieving programs in FBS on the field for 30 years.  The Portland State debacle is not possible even with Mac’s bad coaching at any school of our size with 100 years of history and 25 conference championships.  I run into local casual college football fans all the time not sure we if we are in FBS or FCS.

If you think a handful of billionaires can eradicate world hunger you should return your UNT degree (and I certainly hope you're not an ECON major).

re-read and look for the word "help"

https://www.wfpusa.org/articles/how-much-would-it-cost-to-end-world-hunger/

now, if you're working from the idea that I was claiming a straight cash investment from the billionaire class would be enough to end hunger for good without also massive systemic change in existing political, economic, environmental structures...especially from the wealthier nations in the world...well, no. that'd be a douchebaging stupid assumption and you should pay back daddy every cent for that SMU degree.

but I guess, congrats on some college football success.

That will be worse than you getting stomped by Boston College in the Fenway Bowl last year, lol.

SMU's upturn started two years before NIL opened up. The biggest key is the free transfer rules amd the strategy to go after local players at top programs to come home for more playing time,  to help out baby momma, etc.  NIL definitely amped it up.  But we aren't money whipping alone. We have a big time payroll but we aren't in the A&M/Ohio St/etc universe.  The money just removes the golden handcuffs of under the table money that was keeping them at top programs (especially OL and DL). ACC membership is huge too.

UNT could be running some of this playbook, BTW.  More than enough DFW players looking to get on the field.

SMU got the death penalty because they were incredibly stupid back then.

When the NCAA announced new cheating rules in 1985 that included the death penalty as the most severe potential punishment, SMU responded by phasing out payments to players instead of ending them immediately. At least one of those players got kicked off the team and spilled the beans in a TV interview.

Now SMU thinks it deserves revenge because it was told not to piss on an electrified fence and did it anyway.

Mustang nation would be smarter to leave the past in the past and enjoy the run they're on.

And the biggest key is administrative support, which UNT clearly lacks.  Our Board of Trustees has aligned the university to pursue athletics to support the academic mission of the school and we're all pulling the same direction.
