I see no evidence that he is capable of running a complete program. 2 years in a row we are on the bottom of conference. Portal will hurt.
but north Texas historically doesn’t have the balls to do what is needed.

5-1 to 5-6 is more than fireable. We need to quit wasting time. We’ve looked absolutely horrible in these losses too. Our special teams also need to be fully called out. Absolutely embarrassing effort there. How can we not find a serviceable kicker in the state of Texas???? Middle school kickers make 29 yarders with consistency.

Worse than Littrell. If we had to fire Littrell we should have ended up with somebody better than this guy.

No disrespect to the late great Pirate, but please for the love of God no one that's ever been associated with the air raid system.

Admittedly it was over 15 years ago, but I coached middle school football for 5 years and only saw one field goal made that I can recall.  Maybe things have changed.

Problem is, our leadership continues to sign people to five year contracts.

What I hope to see, just once in my life before going to the grave is to see a coach be signed to a 3 year contract and have to EARN their fourth & fifth year.  Just once.  That tired, lame-ass excuse that “No one worth their salt would come for less” is bullshit.  They certainly will for what we’re paying.  They certainly will!

Especially in the age of the portal, it doesn't take long to build a good team. ECU was 2-10 last year and will probably be 8-4 now.

I know it happens; I just question whether middle schoolers do it consistently.

It’s simply a coach’s decision imo.

In 2009 I watched TCU’s Jaden Oberkrom line up and attempt a 60 yarder for Arlington Martin vs Trinity at Pennington….as a Freshman.  Trinity jumped off sides so he kicked from 55 and just missed to the right by a foot.  It would have been good from 65.  I promise he was kicking in Junior High and if he wasn’t that’s all on the coaches..

Both years my son played for Weatherford Hall Middle School against Aledo, 7th and 8th grade, Aledo kicked all their extra points.  It’s part of the game, and Aledo hires people that demand all of the game be taught and coached.  Nothing about their special teams are missed, just like the rest of their game.  But this didn’t surprise anyone because Aledo had just had a kid, Chance Nevarez on their varsity set the national record for the most extra points made in a row.  Buchanon demanded it, so his Junior High coaches demanded it.

So just like everything, if a coach decides it’s not in his interest then he’s not gonna demand it and coach it.  Same for installing a short yardage play from under center.  If the coach isn’t interested in it and instead thinks handing off 5 yards deep to make 6 inches is the best way, despite how many times he’s seen that not work….then his team will never develop one.  Same for kickers in Junior high.

I've been griping about this for decades at this point. It is amazingly dumb and does nothing for us. Did he have a better deal on the table?  Unlikely..  Would it keep him here if he did well and a big program came calling.  No.   It doesn't do a dang thing for us.   Yet again, and again, and again, and again we do it.  It costs us every single time.

Agreed. I would only do it again for a huge name that would excite the fan base, but make the contract heavily based on incentives over guaranteed money.

For the Morris-type hires, three years with triggers to extend the contract automatically, like a conference championship buys the coach an extra year with a slight raise. Otherwise it is an annual discussion and negotiation.

There are about 30 P4 coordinators and 80 FBS head coaches making more than our HC. I say "about" because private schools don't release numbers so I'm being generous. I'm not saying we don't pay enough to get quality candidates but our salary pool requires additional risk because we're not going to get proven FBS candidates without paying more.  That's why the big programs pay so much to pluck guys. It's a premium payed for proven winning. If you think we're going to get quality candidates by reducing the contracts to 3 years, you're wrong. The only way to make that up would be to double our HC pay to make up for the shorter deal. Three year deals with our pay will get us somebody nobody else wants.

These guys have agents and any good agent will laugh at a 3 year deal and walk away. Less guaranteed money for them and their client if the coach fails.

Just so many reasons this is a horrible idea.
