Thank you. Might seem crazy now with only two games left in the regular season, but no way you get rid of him at 5-1 or 5-2, and it shows a pissed off fanbase that maybe Morris does care to build a serious contender. However, if Morris's tenure ends in failure, one of the questions I will continue to ponder is "Why did we feel like we had to give an unproven position coach the largest G5 coordinator salary in the first place?"

Optics. DB coach which you’d think is vital for running the 3-3-5 for an highly ranked (#1?) P5 team in Iowa St. And, I can also attribute that to the inexperience  of EM assembling a coaching staff. That’s my take.

As much as I feel like we got robbed for having Caponi for two years, Temple has been robbed, conned and ripped off. Their HC is making $2.5 mil a year and he has 6 wins in 3 seasons. Talking about highway robbery. I know that has nothing to do with the Mean Green, but damn we are not the only school being kicked in the nuts financially with nothing to show for it. Okay, maybe I am just trying to make myself feel better about Caponi going past year one.

I have said this before....

The problem with NT Football is it has a Offensive Coordinator  as a Head Football Coach.

Morris will be back next year regardless of the outcome of the next two games. I hope he can pull his sh_t together over the off season. At this point though all I see is a repeat of the last coaching staff....prove me wrong Eric.

Diving deeper on this team is bad for your health and your fandom.   😆Not much of what they do and who they chose to hire, retain and pay makes much sense.  Retaining Seth that last year set all this up.  Clearly only a financial decision cause he lived up to expectations and made no progress.  The anamoly was the weather aided UTSA win.  They used that as an excuse (escaping some fan scrutiny) to keep Coach Littrell.  @GMG_Dallas has some great observations here and it is impressive that he is still a fan.  I can't dive that deep or else I will freaking blow a gasket.  I might go to the ECU game just because the tickets will be so cheap.

There are many fans here who have suffered more at the hands of this program than myself. I consider myself privileged as I went to UNT in 2011. My fandom has had more decent times than bad. I feel like for the majority of my fandom, special teams has been a strength so to see it in its current condition makes it obvious how poor that unit is.

Keeping Caponi shortened the leash on Morris. He basically wasted a full year of resources, personnel, and time by keeping a DC that should have been fired last year. Why should I trust that he can make the right decisions? Next year better be a full turn around or he needs to be gone too.

People need to re-read this.

At this point I’m of the opinion that Morris needs to go too. This firing is scapegoating a problem of his own making. We don’t play a championship calibre style of football in any of the 3 phases. Our special teams are flat out atrocious - I mentioned this early in the season as well. They just don’t get scrutinized because our focus is all on the historically disastrous defense we’ve fielded. We need to clean house. Caponi isn’t enough.

AD, as in Athletic Department (ie HC Eric Morris),, not AD, as in Athletic Director...

SPORTS: Mean Green Athletics Department fires defensive coordinator Matt Caponi

I certainly am not making excuses for the termination of Caponi and agree that it was overdue. However I am surprised that our AD and not HC was the one who reportedly pulled the trigger. I owned a medical device sales agency for 30 years and can testify that no one like firing an employee. In  fact those who do , unless its a really egregious act, usually wait longer than the should because the real mistake was made by you in hiring them in the first place. Having said that I have never terminated an employ that didn't expect it and in most cases were relieved that the ax finally dropped.

I’ll say this as well - There are people in my group of 20+ season ticket holders that have held them since 2003 questioning if they’ll renew next year because it’s not fun anymore. It feels hopeless after 20+ years. They’re just saying, I’ll keep supporting basketball because at least we have a real program and coaching staff that we can all believe in through wins and losses. No one believes in the football coaching staff - except Patrick Cobbs - who we might as well elevate to HC. He’s the only one that actually produces and legitimately gives a shit about UNT.

This program’s situation is dire whether the AD realizes it or not.

Same here.  I am tired of trying to convince my group to re-enlist their time and money to football at UNT.  On the other hand I have no issues getting excited for basketball.  We have a basketball program that is deserving of our support!

This was an error on my part.  I misread the title. The initial report showed Eric Morris making the change.  I’ll update my post.

Did he keep him because of lack of $$ to fire him last year?

Or was he given another year to add players, make adjustments, etc to see if improvement?

I don’t know, but guessing our budget factored into it.
