Dickey had a great run through about 2002-03, but he had been a major loser of a head coach for years before he got to that point.

He beat Boise State, Texas Tech and Baylor and had some respectable losses against the top teams in the country, also.  I’d take that type of loser right now.

The Baylor win was in the middle of the "great run" I mentioned above.  Yes, that stretch was fun.

As for the other two wins you mention, Dickey beat Boise State before they were anything special.  The Tech win was nice, but Matt Simon had also beat Tech just a couple years earlier.  And those two wins were Dickey's only 2 wins that season.

I personally would not prefer that type of loser right now.

Disagree.  In 2001, there was a little run of conference wins, but we closed out the season with a loss to 1st year FBS move-up Troy, and we made a bowl appearance where we looked like we completely didn't belong.

2004 continued the Sun Belt dominance, but we again got destroyed by OOC competition.  Including losing to a 1AA (FCS) team.

Not bad years, but I still see Dickey's "great" run as limited to 2002-03.

What would Dickey’s ‘01-‘04 teams had done in CUSA and the American?  Strictly defense-wise I’d say they would have won at least a couple of championships.

To me that’s the take away of my earlier points.

Rick

I agree on that point which is why I view the 2013 team as the best we’ve had in the last 25 years. Defense wins championships.

So we delete SUMG’s brilliant thread and keep this loser mentality thread.  So North Texas football.

Please enlighten the people who missed SUMG’s “brilliant thread” who might of missed it.  Give us a synopsis of his point.  Was is more than “throw money blindly at the program like SMU does”?

Edit for the Downvoter:  I was deadly serious albeit snarky when I asked about  SUMG’s thread.   I have spent thousands on this program over the past 20 years and I don’t ask the question about supporting it lightly.  Why besides being an alumni would you throw money at this program?  So futile it is not entertaining anymore.  All the historic excuses are gone; bad facilities, low pay, and bad conference.  We have some new excuses but nothing that programs like UTSA, Coastal Carolina, ODU, FAU and UAB haven’t dealt with far better than our program.

How eloquent.  Maybe you didn’t read my suggestion for going after a home grown Defensive Coach and Mean Green Letterman Zach Orr.  Or getting rid of Eric Morris in a productive fashion, letting him “resign” to be a P4 OC.  But hey that is whining to you.  🤷🏽‍♂️

SUMG = Stand Up Mean Green.  Believe he’s a comedian.  His thread was fun, as you might expect, but dark.  Not gonna try to summarize and get deleted.

Anyways, my suggestion is do whatever you want.  I’m tired of taking the yearly beatings that this program dishes out, too.  I’d just like to see us dump a coach within 2-3 years once we realized we whiffed.  Let’s speed up the process of finding the right one, not delay the inevitable and drag our record and fan base through years of losing and bad football.  For me, Morris was a miss from game 1.  Gave him another couple games to prove otherwise, but after finishing last year the way we did and retaining the defensive staff, it’s not gonna work.  Move on.

I think FAU and UAB would’ve still beaten us in CUSA play in those years. We wouldn’t have scored enough against them, but probably lost closer games to them each.

Respectfully Darrell Dickey was one Big West season away from being fired. If the Sun Belt hadn’t fallen into his lap he’d have been gone at the end of 2001.

And yes Dickey had tough out of conference games, but he also lost to both Troy and FAU during the 26 game conference win streak (they just weren’t in our conference yet). From 2001 to 2004 he only beat 3 bowl eligible teams.

Here is a snippet from one of my prior posts on Dickey. I doubt anyone would say ULM had facilities advantages on us, even in 2001.

************

From October 13, 2001 to September 10, 2005,  Dickey’s teams won 26 consecutive conference games. The streak was bookended by wins over the MUTS. The week before the streak started we lost to 2-9 conference mate ULM. The game that ended the streak was a loss to 4-7 Troy. The combined record for the 26 teams run through was 99-203. If you exclude the 26 losses from NT, their combined record was 99-177. Of those 26 wins, just three came against bowl-eligible teams.

Additionally, we lost to future conference mates Troy at the end of ‘01 and FAU at the start of ‘04 which would’ve shrunken the streak to 13 games if they had been in our conference at the time.

*************

At that time Howard Schlenburg [sic] was coaching FAU and had good teams. I don't remember much about Troy.

Not a “little” run, we went 5-1 in conference, winning the final 5 games straight, which was the start to his 25 straight conference game winning streak.  Not sure how you can dismiss a year in which we won a conference championship?

And that Troy game was a late make up due to 9-11.  We shouldn’t have had to play it.  That Troy team, coming off an 11-2 season the year before was playing an independent schedule and finished 7-4 and beat Mississippi State that year.  They beat us on a last second FG that ticked off one of our players fingers.

It was a losing season.  Like I said, not bad, considering UNT's lack of conference championships since Dickey left.  But a 5-7 record doesn't rise to the level of "great" in my book.

LOL, that Boise St team went 10-3 that season ending in a win in the Human Bowl.  They won 10 games the next year and 8 the next.

I’d say you have some extreme parameters on what “special” is.

When you toss out "Boise State" these days, people start thinking about the giant killers that beat Oregon, OU, etc.  None of that had happened yet.  I'm not saying they weren't a good team, just that they weren't that team.

Again, we had a 2-win season that year.  Those were some of my worst years as a UNT fan, and I'd just as soon not go back to that.

I think that the reality is that we are just incredibly spare. I watched the NO Blwls and loved it, but absolutely nobody besides the diehards in this site ever cared. We drew flies to  games at a toilet of a stadium. As FFR mentioned, we had some great wins, but we usually just UNT’d the bed in OOC play. Once we lost Scott Hall at QB, like Mason Fine or Derek Thompson, we fell apart.

Our alumni don’t care because the administration has never cared about winning. They don’t have to. We get plenty of new students every year. And they are completely content with music and arts being the primary window. Heck, a solid basketball program can’t get 35-40% of its arena filled. It never changes here because it’s not meant to change or ever will. It’s why 98% of the UNT alumni base walk away.

Are you sure Rick? I mean yes he beat both Boise and Texas Tech in 1999. He also lost to a 3-8 UNLV, a 1-10 Baylor, a 4-7 Arkansas State, a 3-8 Nevada, and a 4-7 Utah State. I get that those are two exciting wins but would you trade that for the 6 bad losses and a 2-9 overall record?

I agree with the reason why most of our alumni don’t care.  However I don’t agree with why our administration doesn’t care.  I think they want to win on the cheap and not rock the boat with Old Denton.   If they wanted to win they would publicly pursued and likely hired one of the high profile younger coaches that made a stop in one of our old conferences or FCS.  Lane Kiffin, Larry Coker,  Major Applewhite,  Dat Nguyen (as a DC), Kevin Sumlin, Doug Williams, Howard Schnellenberger, Briles, Gary Patterson, June Jones, Deion Sanders or etc.  Now if Zach Orr becomes a FBS head coach without going directly to a program that has not won multiple P5/P4 conferences title or New Years 6 bowls since 1980 without his agent getting a call from UNT it won’t be a surprise.  The only coach hire I was ever slightly excited for was Dan McCarney.  I have followed  this team as a knowledgeable CFB fan for 25 years.

I don’t know why we are nitpicking the legacy of the only coach in 50 years that has put multiple team trophies in our trophy case.  If you omit coaches who earned Hall of Fame status after leaving here you are left with Odus Mitchell and Dickey as the only coaches to ever “dominate” any conference for any length of time.  Now looking back through history I am even more frustrated that in 2004 it appears we never tried to get Jerry Moore to come back to UNT.  But come to think of it, maybe it is karma.  A program that raves about Hayden Fry every opportunity rarely honor Odus Mitchell properly.  A 20 year tenure with 10 conference titles. We should be playing on Odus Mitchell Field inside (DATCU, Apogee, or whatever corporation that wants cough up naming rights money) stadium.

To the Vomiting Eagle Reaction care to elaborate why?  Do you not know who Jerry Moore is and what he accomplished at App State after leaving NTSU in 1981?  Mitchell rebuilding the program out of WWII not impressive along with integrating the program on the way to 10 conference titles and 7 consecutive wining seasons?  Texas Longhorns play at DKR.

DKR coached 19 seasons at UT

Mitchell 20 at UNT

DKR 11 conference titles

Mitchell 10 conference titles
