You guys apparently are correct regarding when the usage of "Mean Green" as a reference to our entire football team instead of just the defense. I don't know if that applied to the basketball teams as well.

1974-75 Mean Green Basketball team (with Flying Worm)...

Ok, yes, I will buy your ugly flying worm jacket, paper weight, lost phone (when you find it), and anything else “flying worm”!

Message me!

I was smoking, ashes fell on jacket and the rest is history. I still use the paper weight but evidently don't pay attention to the engraving.

Did basketball team go by "Mean Green" or"Eagle" when they wore the worm on their shirts?

Mean Green.

Changed back to Eagles after Fry left, and Jerry Moore, in 1983.   Also dropped to 1-AA and dropped the Flying Worm.  All poor decisions!

RV returned us to Mean Green.

I agree! However our option was to either drop to 1AA or drop football, and the decision could have gone either way. Thanks for the history lesson regarding the usage of "Mean Green" as a universal nickname long before I was aware of it. Your input is much appreciated!

However I did contribute to the athletic department when Fry was AD/HC receiving a paper weight engraved with North Texas State University and had a flying worm in center above "MEAN GREEN". I just looked at it and realized that Fry did promote the nickname.I also got the ugliest green polyester  jacket i have ever seen that should of had a no smoking sign on it. In addition I got a flying worm helmet that was actually a working telephone that I lost in a move 25 years ago. Regardless I think we can agree that our nickname is unique even if we don't always play to it and wish that we had kept the flying  worm which really popped in electric green.

100% agree and it's a damn shame that the TWO MOST UNIQUE/ICONIC things that we have are barely used to market our product.

ICON - Noun
  1) special design or visual object representing a quality, type, group, etc.
