Rick Villareal approves of the helmet design.

Rick told me he changed the nickname from Eagles to  Mean Green because of all the local/regional high schools that had an "eagle" as their mascot. This is first time I have seen Mean Green on our helmets and I really like it .

If only we had a Logo we could put on a helmet, instead of feathers and script...

Mean Green is great for Branding and Marketing...

so would a visual Logo people could associate with us=

It was Hayden Fry who came in and set about to change the culture of the athletic department. Toward that end he took the nickname that was being used for the defense and made it the nickname for the whole team. He then changed the shade of green that the teams wore, and he had someone create a very unique Logo for the Helmet. Which happened to be a "stylized Eagle".....aka the "flying worm".

The Eagle is our mascot, and Mean Green is our nickname.

Thank you Sydney Sue Graham. And thank you Hayden Fry.

Great look.

Can’t decide how much I like the helmet.  I definitely don’t dislike it, but I don’t think I love it.  I’ll decide after seeing it tonight.

Green and white = no complaints

T-shirt police here.  Why can’t we either have our players tuck their undershirts in their pants, like basketball players, or cut the bottom of the undershirt off so that it doesn’t hang sloppily out.  And here’s a thought…Why not wear a white t-shirt with a white uniform ?

I don't think Hayden did this. Perhaps you could provide some reference as I can't recall the term "mean green " applying to our team as a whole until the 2000's. Yes the eagle is our mascot and mean green is the nickname of our team. Also I believe Jim Hobney [sic] was also involved in the creation of the flying worm bet can't exactly remember how. Maybe you know.

Opps! Jim Hobdy created the UNT Battle Flag in 1986 and WAS NOT involved with Rick Spear's design of the flying worm which was adopted by Hayden Fry and used during his tenure. My bad. It is a shame that we didn't stick with it and it certainly separated us from any other eagle mascot. However if you google  history of  Mean Green knickname you will find the credit for its universal usage by UNT attributed to Rick Villareal, not Hayden Fry.

The Mean Green nickname was used a lot during the Fry era. There were "Mean Green And Proud Of It" bumper stickers and buttons. Almost every other bumper sticker used the words "Mean Green." Before football and especially basketball games....the fans would start chanting....."Bring Out The Mean Green!....Bring Out The Mean Green!....."Bring Out The Mean Green!".....

I always thought Rick was a dummy and stubborn when it comes to the marketing and PR pursuits.  He so desperately wanted to seperate the athletics from the university that he didn't want the U to be with the NT and I always thought that was simply misguided.
