MINNEAPOLIS – The UNT men’s basketball team heads to Minnesota on Wednesday for its first road test of the season.

The Mean Green (2-0) and Golden Gophers (2-0) are scheduled to tip-off from Williams Arena in Minneapolis at 7 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield and on Big Ten Network +.

Wednesday will be first time North Texas and Minnesota have ever met. Furthermore, it will be the first time in program history the Mean Green have played a game in the state of Minnesota. It will be just the second opponent UNT has ever faced from the Land of 10,000 Lakes. In 1943 they took on Hamline in the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City and won 45-41. Hamline was the reigning NAIA national champs.

UNT heads into Wednesday’s contest having won two straight over Big Ten opponents.

The Mean Green most recently defeated Wisconsin 56-54 in the semifinals of the 2023 NIT. Two years before that they upset fourth-seeded Purdue 78-69 in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament for the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament win.

A win Wednesday for the Mean Green improves their record to 3-0. It would mark the first time since the 2018-19 season UNT has begun a year with three straight wins. That season the Mean Green started the year 8-0 and had the best 17-game start to a season in program history as they opened with a 16-1 record.

A win on Wednesday also improves North Texas’ road record over the last four seasons to 26-10. They enter the game at Minnesota with a .714 road winning percentage since the start of the 2021-22 season. Only Houston, Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s have been better on the road over the last four seasons.

After Wednesday North Texas will remain on the road as they travel to Lake Charles, Louisiana to face reigning Southland Conference champions McNeese on Nov. 18. The Cowboys are coming off a 30-win season and a trip to the 2024 NCAA Tournament. From 1982 through 1996 UNT and McNeese were conference mates in the Southland and played one another every year. This season’s matchup will be the Mean Green’s first trip to Lake Charles since 1996.
