Fire the OC. The defense showed up.

After the last bye week, we looked terrible against FAU but won. This bye week, we looked terrible against Army and lost. I wonder if EM really knows how to get his team ready after a break? If this is the case, a bowl game isn’t going to look good since there will be a multitude of weeks before the game is played.

I don’t think the unpreparedness is limited to bye weeks. We have started slowly is many games this year.

the defense was not a strength.

The defense did give us chance to win.  The offense tried to play ball control to help the defense (multiple 4 down conversions).  Our 3rd quarter 3 and out drive lasting 30 seconds was the exception.  Then, when we needed the ball, the strength of our team allowed a 96 yard 13 minute touchdown drive.

A very long shot to even make a bowl game.

They didn’t give up 500 yards rushing, only 295. I get we held them below their season average, but Army only had the ball 7 times the entire game.

Our offense tried to intentionally limit possessions to help the defense.

That and the defense caused 2 turnovers against a team that doesn’t turn the ball over.

Our vaunted Top 5 offense scored 3 fn points! 3 red zone trips - turnover on downs with 1st and goal 6 inches from the goal line and two interceptions. An unimaginable disaster. Then factor in receivers dropping sure fire first downs, a beyond pedestrian run game we’re forcing with a 4th or 5th string running back and so on…the offense was a complete failure.

In no reality is this specific game on the defense. Sorry.

They absolutely were today. Especially given what we all expected. This loss is on Eric and Chandler Morris. If you can’t see that there’s no helping you.

Guy dropped passes and ran bad routes also.  When they caught the ball they were thinking too much instead of going north and south.  Not to mention Army got pressure with 3 man fronts.   Collectively the offense choked.  Army didn't respect our offense and they were going to force us to score before going deeper into their offensive playbook taking risk.  They were willing to give us death by a thousand cuts.  EVERYTIME you get Army Offense 10 yards off schedule your defense should be able to force a FG attempt, Punt, or a 4th 6 yards plus they FAIL to convert.

Their job is to score points, not limit possessions.

News Flash: Army has long drives against EVERYBODY; so if your strategy is to play keep away from a team that is the absolute best at keep away, you are plain dumb.

The offense put up three, that’s 1…2…3 points.  It is absolute lunacy to say an offense that failed to put up points on THREE separate trips inside the 15 yard line was hamstrung by a defense that surrendered a total of 14.

It is a bad defense that can't be judged like a regular decent defense.  To say the defense played anything short of at least decent defense is just  unfair to them.  But they had an extra week to prepare. 🤷🏽‍♂️.  This is just too much like Seth Littrell.  An offensive coach who can win games against equal competition at over 0.500.   And no shot to win against teams on par with us without stellar QB play or weather conditions favoring a dominant group of running backs.  What was the point of paying Seth not to coach last year if you were just going to hire an Air Raid clone who overvalues defenses specifically designed ONLY to slow down the Air Raid?

I understand what you’re saying, but I think we’ll just disagree on this.  Turning my attention to UTSA.

I’m just not that gutted this morning. Now if our defense reverts back to giving up 45 on Friday, I will be upset. And it could totally happen as they play O down south.

We are a rhythm offense. We could never catch a rhythm and the defense really played hard. They were wacked and kept giving us a random chance. I’d take a fraction of that resolve in San Antonio and if we get it we win. Morris and the team will see space and gaps and speedy receivers getting open in Green. It will be a telling game and the beasts who they played hard against are in the rearview.

San Antonio and East Carolina will be tough, but right now the focus is getting 6. Then get more, then win the bowl game. There are still juicy elevation goals ahead.

Our defense didn't give up too many points, but they struggled to get off the field all day. So yeah, they showed up. But they didn't show up like Army's defense. In the battle of the defenses, Army defense outplayed our defense, and they did it with 2-star talent. I'd take their DC over ours.

As for our offense... they got embarrassed today. My biggest problem with these spread offenses is that they can't line up and play smash mouth football when you have to have 1 yard. Morris has to install a jumbo package.

THREE, 3 and I mean 3 points.

FCS Leghigh scored a TD to tie their game with Army with 43 seconds left in the 1st Quarter.

Army BULLIED our offense anytime they needed to.  The only other team to get held to 3 point by Army this year was a 1-7 Air Force team with an Offense that Army is so familiar with they don't have to game plan to start. If Morris doesn't run the table these are the options he should be presented.

1. Stay on and take a paycut equal to the Defense Coaching Staff we choose to bring on to fix the mess you  made. (A final salary no lower than 500k per year)

2. "Resign" and find an OC job and we will pay you the difference between your new salary and that salary you get at your next gig.

3. Stay on with full salary doing whatever you want but your contract is restructured to were all guaranteed money stops at end of 2025 with a 300k severance package if let go at that time.

Because if you have expectations for this program to ever be more than "hit 6" this kind of thing will make you will stop supporting the program. And by "supporting",  I don't consider supporting as watching on TV occasionally, buying North Texas merchandise as a proud Alumni or not showing up to a game (other than homecoming) until they get to 5-0 in a season.  Supporting means going to games regardless of record if you can or giving small/large donations to Athletic Fun equal to what you might be willing to buy a ticket for if you can't attend.

If they don't win out and I don't see major defensive improvement next year.  My behavior won't qualify as supporting the program as I have defined it.  My support isn't huge but I do what I can.  Not being in Atheltic Department meetings for the outside it just doesn't look like they are doing what they can to get beyond Hit 6.

My disappointment with the offense was that they changed their profile. The moment you change you concede to the opposition. I wish the offense would have come out and been mavericks. I mean 14 more points we win that game. The change stunted their rhythm further.

I will say that they played navy and army pretty solid these past 2 years. We’re not far off from beating this style of play. We’re not getting trucked like some teams do when they face these teams.

I also believe that we’re solidly second tier in the American. But Morris keeps pointing to year 3 like at WSU. If we make progress in ‘24 we have a chance to move into top tier in ‘25. Yeah yeah different game now but I want to see progress from 23 to 24. We can still do that.

Morris just gets in his own way. I prefer more intermediate routes opposed to short quick hitting routes. They moved the ball quite well with their first drive doing just that, then went back to the stale quick hitters that barely gains anything. Keep the damn passes going forward instead of sideline to sideline. And, learn to gain ONE DAMN YARD!!!

This is such an odd claim to make. Army had two drives go 10 plays or more, one ended in a punt and the other resulted in a TD. Otherwise they had a 9 play 48 yard drive that they scored a TD on due to a failed onside kick. The other 3 drives we got off the field within 7 plays or less (not counting the final drive). Considering they pretty much always go for it on 4th and short, I'd consider that a success in getting off the field.

Not counting the end of half "drives" against ECU, Army scored on 7 of 10 possessions. Against UAB they scored on 7 of 9. Against Tulsa they scored on 8 of 9. Against Temple 6 of 10. Against Rice 5 of 8. Against UNT, 2 of 6 not counting the final possession of the game. Just some numbers for perspective.

I've posted this nonstop but this was the first multi-turnover game of the year for Army. It was their QBs first interception. We held them to their lowest point total in 14 games. What more did the defense need to do?

I've also posted this before: our offense is explosive but inconsistent. Good but not great. This game is a prime example. Every week we go dry for 4 or 5 straight drives. That may be ok when you get 14 offensive possessions but against a team that takes a 50 seconds off the clock with every snap, you can't go dry like that. It is what it is, I guess. Just another example of this offensive philosophy not being made for winning football.

Independence Bowl reps were in attendance Saturday, even ate lunch at the Alumni pavilion.  I'm only assuming they were scouting NT and not Army who could finish 12-1.

JHC!  We were already there.  EM was supposed to get us over the hump immediately, not in 3 effin' years.  That was the sales pitch to us.  Any coach could sell you on a 3-year rebuild project, but he sold us on getting us to the "next level" from the get go, not by year 3.  So, either he's a failed coach or a snake-oil salesman.  I really wanted him to succeed.  I was hoping his bluster was true and by his third year here he would have had so much success he would have been hired away.  By the looks of it, he's just may not ready for the role and we may be facing a crash and burn scenario by year 3.
