Where else would a program that has won a CBI and NIT title in the last decade, while also having a win in the actual NCAA Tournament, plus having a winning record AGAIN, need to even worry about getting an extra boost to come watch the team play a conference game in mid-to-late January?

The simple answer is nowhere. The Denton excuse that I hate hearing is that there is just too much to do in the Metroplex...no, not on a Wednesday night on a cold night there isn't.

But I've been clearly told it's because our marketing/promotions suck and if people just knew that we were good, the place would double in attendance. Sometimes, the fact is that you can lead the hose to water, but you can't make it drink.

As for my ideas, it would be to meet the people where they are. Have the College of Music and Arts setup exhibits in the Super Pit's concourse. Have the UNT Drumline perform at halftime and at the end of the game. See if you can get people to come watch them and see if it gets them interested in that athletic thing going on. Now, I realize that the Deans of those Colleges may not want to help nor do anything to help and that would basically cement the argument that nothing will ever work here because of the culture. But it's worth a shot and it would cost nothing. Have a battle of the frats and who can get the best turnout/energy for the game...do the same thing with the sororities, too, at another game.

But whatever you do, don't blame the locals and the students...that's CLEARLY hurtful and mean.

These are some good ideas and the reason I say get input from multiple sources and not just rely on a promotion's person.  The drum line would be great at games and I'd increase the size of the basketball band. We have 500 in the green brigade, get at least 100 in the basketball band. That increases the excitement and makes it a fun atmosphere. I still think having a Guyer, Ryan, Braswell, Denton High night would be great. Have their bands, drill team, cheerleaders perform pregame and at halftime. Cheer and Band parents travel. Also give out free or discounted tickets to the students from each school. These don't seem to hard to do, especially with the number of Wednesday and Saturday/Sunday games we have.

I think the answer is most any major metro area University.  Everyone always talks up how lucky NT is to be located in DFW metroplex, but it's a double edged sword.  If you look at school athletic programs in the footprint of big cities, they often have issues with attendance.  I mean you don't necessarily want to be in the middle of nowhere, but when you're in (or close to) a Philadelphia or a New York, or a Chicago, or a Miami, etc. unless you're winning in a BIG way, or playing a top 5 opponent,  it's tough to compete for viewers against NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL, etc., etc..

Inside sources indicate 1,310 student tickets were claimed. As of Fall 2021, there were 6,349 beds in 15 dorms across campus.

Is there a different between tickets claimed and actually scanned/used to attend or does claimed mean they were used?  Looking at the seating capacity of the student section (just lower bowl sections 113-116), it looks like there are about 765-775 +/- 10 seats available.  I think the pep band is in 112 and whatever they don't take up is additional student seating.  Even if every seat in those lower bowl sections was occupied, I don't think you get to 1,000.

My 0.02: There's such a disconnect between our marketing team and the outside world - for a lot of reasons - that most people still don't know about what's going on in FB/MBB/WBB.

In that sense, the "horse to water" metaphor doesn't really apply.  Unless you want to say they still don't know that there is water in front of them.

Temple drew 5700 to Memphis before us on a Thursday night, but then only 2900 last Sunday afternoon, but the NFL Philly Eagles were in town playing.  Previous home game was vs Wichita State on Jan 3 drew 3600.

Temple has a long history of being an elite college basketball program, but up and down recently.

I have had season tickets in Section 107 for over 25 years. Students regularly come and sit in the section. In at least   50% of the games that I have attended over the years I have had to chase students out of my seats. In every game I can remember there have been students occupying seats in that section. Many students pay little attention to the location of student seating.

Last night two individuals, apparently students, wearing Maniac Jerseys sat in row one of 107 and were chased out by the season ticket holder for those seats. They relocated to seats a few Rows up that were unoccupied. They did not cheer, they seemed annoyed when fans in front of them stood up to cheer or chant and were for the most part very passive.

Temple kinda proves my point though (and if you of watched the game on TV, there wasn't anyway they had 2900 against Tulane, maybe half of that).  Huge crowd against a Top 25 opponent, but have a tougher time when it's not.  When Temple had some of their great teams under Chaney, they routinely drew awesome...but they were also making the Sweet 16 or Elite 8.

I'm sure some students didn't use their tickets, but I also see a lot just sitting outside of the designated student sections. One of the frats posted up a few rows behind us in 124 after halftime.
